Stephen's Story

Life In September 1963, after High School and a semester at the Jr College, I left Lancaster and moved to Las Vegas with my dad and his family. I went to work for a Propane Gas Company and drove a delivery truck. The route I was assigned was at the Atomic Test Site at Mercury Nevada. In December of 1964 I met my first wife, Gwynn. We were married on Feb 7, 1965. On April 1st, I quit my job and we moved to her home town of Santa Paula, back in California. The marriage didn’t last long and in June, we split up and I went back to Lancaster. We were in the process of getting a divorce in September when she was killed in a one car rollover. On December 24, 1965 Karen Lindsay (AV Class of ’64) and I were married in Lancaster. I had gotten a job with Northrop Aircraft, at Plant 42 in Palmdale, and Karen worked for J.C. Penney’s on Lancaster Blvd. We got an apartment and settled in to married life. In June of ’66 we went to Tacoma, Washington on a vacation to visit Karen’s family. She was very familiar with the area but I had never been there. Well, I fell in love with the mountains, especially Mt. Rainier, the Puget Sound and the fact that everything was green – not brown and dry. Boeing was hiring just about anyone who walked in off the street, so we decided to go home, quit our jobs and move to Tacoma. In October ’66 we moved north and found that Boeing had stopped hiring and was, in fact, laying off people. No job. And Karen was pregnant. And we had a new car with payments due. And no place to live. Oh, to be young again. We stayed with Karen’s grandparents while I looked for a job. After several weeks I was hired by the Navy Department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. As a Helper Pipefitter. I was making 5 cents an hour more that I had been at Northrop when I quit (that was $2.95). Over the next 30 years we lived in several of the suburbs around Tacoma and I pursued a career in civil service. Karen had a miscarriage in November of ’66 but was immediately pregnant again in January of ‘67. Our only child, Annmarie was born on October 7, 1967. Annmarie, our daughter had graduated from high school and, wouldn’t you know it, she moved...Expand for more
to Lancaster to go Jr. College. She never quite made it to college – she met a guy, got married, and in ‘88 blessed us with a Grandson, named Stephen ( what a coincidence). Fast forward to October 1991, Karen was diagnosed with Lung Cancer (never smoked) and passed away on June 2, 1992, 3 weeks shy of her 46th birthday. Annmarie and her husband separated in ‘91 and she and Stephen moved back home to Tacoma with us to be with her mom during her last days. Next chapter: I met another awesome woman, Charlotte. We got married August 1993, Moved to Silverdale, Wa in 1994 and I retired early from the Gov’t in June 1995 with almost 30 years. I have returned to work with a number of Defense Contractors and most recentlywas working for General Dynamics, Electric Boat division in Bremerton with occasional trips to Pearl Harbor, San Diego and other points west. While i still have my health I have chosen to retire, again (3rd time). Last day was 12/21/2012 - me and the Mayans have the same calendar. Annmarie is an author and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) counselor in Gig Harbor Washington. Stephen is 23 years old, lives in Lancaster with his fiance' Tara. Great Grandpa status isn't far away. And me? I’'m retired and having the time of my life. One of these days I’ll slow down long enough to download some ‘then & now’ pictures. Over the years I have run into some folks from AV. There was Mike Downing, we worked together at the shipyard. Then there was Billy Duncan, Karen knew him from church in Lancaster. And Sunny Hopper (Palmer), She was one of the 3 Girls I ran around with during my Senior year, Val Evans and Becky Jones were the other two. We used to meet at Denney’s before school for coffee. Sonny called me one day in 1992 and she, her husband and I went out to dinner and caught up on old times. They were both working for Boeing and looking forward to retiring. I have heard from Mary Comini and Jerry Darneal in the last 2 years. The last 6 months of 2012 I spent in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. I had a great time and enjoyed the people, the Island and the work. I have hundreds of pictures of the areas tourist attractions not to mention a pretty good tan.
