Stephen's Story
Life
It is easy to look back on my life and see the distinct stages of my life. The high school, college and medical school years certainly have been touched upon. The day after I graduated from med school, I married and so began simultaneously the stage of married life and being trained in my eventual specialty of Emergency Medicine. So also did the beginnings of the child-rearing years which ultimately turned out to be the hardest of any of life's endeavors. Even considering the pressure cooker of Emergency Medicine, nothing has compared to the challenges of three daughters. That coupled with the decision by my wife to go to medical school, have offered an abundance of life's challenges as the years have unfolded. One of the surprises, unanticipated have been our return to live in Memphis where we currently reside, actively engaged in the juggling act of carreer, family and everyday life.
School
High school was predominantly constructed around athletics, particularly football. Work was a necessity, occupying a significant amount of time. Last to receive a measure of time was any pursuit...Expand for more
of scholasticism. This I would now consider to be a reversal of priorities.
College
College life as most remember was a blast. It was full of many different experiences-some of which were good, some totally non-productive. I enjoyed the emphasis on learning, excelling in my class work in Science and Math classes. There were seemingly endless hours spent in the campus library studiously pursuing my goal of medical school. Counterbalanced with that was the procurement of a football scholarship and my first college girlfriend.Thrown into the mix was a prolific weekend partying schedule and college was a memorable experience.
Subsequent to college life was medical school life which was a much different flavor. While still fun, school attained a more serious set of attributes. Tests over different groups of material were harder and covered so much more material than I had heretofore experienced. Partys were few and far between but the content of the material at school was imminently more interesting. four years of this was enough however and graduation in 1981 was eagerly anticipated.
