Stephen's Story

Stephen Joseph Vice President and General Manager PVT Landfill Mr. Joseph is a registered geologist and hydrogeologist with 30 years of experience in performing geologic and landfill studies in California, Hawaii, and throughout the U.S. He has performed geologic, hydrogeologic and atmospheric investigations at numerous landfill sites. His landfill experience includes siting investigations, geotechnical investigations and technical specifications needed for liner design, analysis of hydrologic conditions, barrier studies, recycling, solar caps for renewable energy production and all phases of permitting. He has worked on over 25 different landfills ranging in size from small private landfills to L.A. County Sanitation Districts' Puente Hills Landfill, which is the largest landfill west of the Mississippi River. He has prepared permits necessary for a bioremediation facility, the first and only commercial operation of its kind in Hawaii at Nanakuli Landfill, Oahu. committee, to provide guidance in the implementation of Federal Subtitle D Regulations in Hawaii. The Hawaii Landfill Taskforce has developed a DOH guidance document for groundwater monitoring at landfills in Hawaii. Steve has been the District Manager for Waste Management of Hawaii’s West Hawaii Landfill on the Big Island and permitted the only CERCLA sites in the State of Hawaii. He was the environmental manager for Waste Management’s Hawaii Market Area, which involved all environmental issues for Waste Management’s three landfills in Hawaii. Steve is currently the Vice-President and General Manager at PVT Landfill, the largest landfill in the State of Hawaii, located in Nanakuli, Oahu, Hawaii. He is working with Honua Power in setting up PVT’s recycling operations and feedstock preparation for the production of bio-convertible material for Honua Power and other feedstock users. PVT expects to do 80% recycling within two years and is working with the local U.S. Green Building Council and the General Contractors Association on recycling for LEED projects.
