Stephen's Story

Workplace Upon graduation I got a job...right away at Alcoa Research Labs as a Chemist-Technician....That lasted until they shut the place down on 31 Jul 77 (I remember the date well). I cruised the world and country for a year and then ended up taking a teching job (Chemistry/Physics) at Gibault HS, Waterloo, Ill for a year. I got a job as a Medical Technologist at Barnes Hospital in Clinical Chemistry, was Board Certified in Clinical Chemistry and worked there until 1981, when I got the crazy idea to go back to school, study civil engineering and work part time. I worked at County Hospital and SmithKline BioScience Labs until being hired by Citation Computer Systems in August of 1984. I learned the ins and outs of the Lab Computer Industry, did support, management and sales until 2000, when we were bought out by Cerner from Kansas City. Come 2004, they shut us all down, and I luckily got on at ADT Security as a Commercial Sales Rep....and they treat me like a king there! Military I first entered the military on 13 Jul 70 at St. Louis Mo at the 5038th USAR School. I was sent to Fort Campbel...Expand for more
l, Ky for Basic Training on 9 Oct 70 (funny how those dates stick in one's mind!!!)....went back to Ft. Campbell for AIT to be trained for a Film Operator (what a wimpy job!) for my unit) and was released on 1 Mar 70. Came back and they made a admin clerk out of me in the S3 section. Our CO was a Full Bird Colonel. We had no NCOIC (1SG) for the EMs. Odd unit. We had 48 field grade officers and 24 EMs to support them. We spent 6 ATs at Fort Sill, Okla teaching BOBC and BOAC for Field Artillery. I re-upped. Went to a TO&E unit in Belleville (892d Trans Co.) as Tng NCO. At this time I was a Staff Sergeant E6. I studied for two years to be commissioned (this was a mistake) and in 1978 received a direct commission from Jimmy Carter as a Second Lieutenant in the Transportation Corp. Immediately I was assigned to be a Detachment CO of.....Det 1, 1009th Supply and Service Co, Fairfield, Ill. After two years, was transferred back to the 892d as XO of that unit. Was promoted to 1LT but then I was "RIF'ed" on 31 Dec 81 in a general reduction in force and my service to our great nation was over.
