Stephen's Story

I guess loosing an old friend recently made me think of people I have lost contact with because of time between visits or distance. I attempted to renew some old aquaintences at our 30 th reunion and was pretty good at keeping up with a couple people for a while then drifted off again. The human condition I suppose. If you have done a search or stopped my my profile that must mean you wondered what happened to me. Well here it is. After graduation I went to Nashville, TN to attend a small Christian college named David Lipscomb. It's claim to fame is Pat Boone is an alum. I didn't last there too long because of it's strict rules and I guess my lenient parents didn't prepare me for that. I got through two years and decided I would work for a while. My first job was as a manager of a Jeans West store. I was the youngest manager in a chain of over 100 stores. I took a step up after a couple of years and went to work for a European men's clothier, Alan Abis and did a little modeling. Nashville was a big town compared to Massena and the largest city I had ever lived in. With being a big town it offered lots of opportunities of which I took no advantage. I partied for the next three years and then moved to Memphis to sell real estate. Bad timing. The developer that I worked for went into banckruptcy and I was stuck without a job, so I started waiting tables at a couple of upscale restaurants. It was lots of fun but I didn't see it going anywhere, when a friend told me he was leaving his job as the head waiter at a local tennis club and offered it to me. I jumped at it and stayed with the Racquet Club of Memphis for 4 years as Maitre' d and Assistant Food and Beverage Manager. The manager of the club liked me and was ready to recommend me to a club he had started his management career at in Texas, when I was recruited by Carnival Cruise Lines in Miami. I was hired as an Assitant Maitre'd and hated every minute I was on board the ship. Being a junior staff member has it's disadvantages. Issac, Julie and Doc were not in the slightest way related to the life a crew member leads. After weeks of nightmares, one that recurred was waking up on a table in the dining room with nothing on, during dinner, I decided it was a sign that it was time to sign off. I called the home office from San Juan and resigned, but my boss o...Expand for more
ffered me a new land based job which I accepted. I served as the Food Services Manager for the third largest cruise ship in the world. It was a challenging and taxing job. We brought in Carnival's first new ship and I went to California to standardize the service and presentation of all the meals and to make sure the staff in the dining room and on deck were performing as expected. It was a great job with the exception of having to be dockside every Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 am and getting the departing crew members off the ship and to the airport, new crew members to the ship, loading supplies and getting the ship ready to sail by 4:00 pm. I decided, with my partner at the time, that 1984 would be a good year to start my own catering company. Don't ever do that. It is killer work with little monetary gain. Oh, I didn't mention it but I came out of the closet while in Nashville. My partner in Miami was the head of production for the regional opera company. He later became the GM and the little company,The Greater Miami Opera became Florida Grand Opera. It was sounds big but it is still a regional company. During that time I got to meet my first stars. The biggest being Luciano Pavarotti. It was fun for 13 years and then he decided he wanted to move on, without me. I was at a loss , although I had started a new career in the interior design trade. I was working for Angelo Donghia, one of the leading interior designers in the world at the time. Unfortunately he died in 85. The company continued and I had found my niche. I was with the company through the end of the 80's, and the 90's and retired in 2004 after almost 20 years managing sales in Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. Donghia really was good to me and I met some great people and some who thought they were great. Haven't we all. My partner Paul and I live in Coral Gables, FL from late fall through early spring and then we escape the hurricane season our home in NW Indiana on Lake Michigan, with our two dogs Mabel and Billy. We travel extensively, entertain often and enjoy a really great life together. That is a brief explanation of my life since you saw me last. I have lost most of my hair and gained a few pounds but don't want to gripe too much, there is enough of that already. Drop me a line and let me know what you're up to these days.
