Stephen's Story

Life: August 2021: Headed to the “60th” Reunion next month in GR. Who’s going to be there ? March 2021: My sister and Stuart pulled up stakes after living decades nearby in Los Altos and moved to Provincetown, MA, to live near her sons B&B - Brasswood. I miss her! June 2020: my oldest sister Joan passed away at 80 last month. She’d had a stroke in October so had to move into a retirement place. She hated it but she had become disabled. Eventually she had another stroke and didn’t survive. She was 80. Just Liz and I are left. I am now looking forward to the reunion in September, 2021. I expect to be there. Now that Covid is upon us I have vowed not to live in a retirement home but instead I plan to be a burden to my kids. Fortunately they are both willing but I am not ready to go. Not sure I will go on those cruises after this year. Too bad. But I have hobbies and friends. Nothing life threatening so far. January 2020: Turned 77. Still skiing. Looking forward to the 50th reunion in September. November, 2018 Still here and healthy.. Been in this house 41 years. Keeps me busy. Kids live in Monterey and El Dorado Hills, CA. I visit them often. Bought a season pass for Sierra at Tahoe ski resort to keep active. It’s only an hour and a half from my sons house. My wife’s younger sister died of cancer recently ar only 68. That means the whole family is now gone. Odd that her parents lived longer than any of the four kids: 78 and 76. Hope I can keep skiing well into my 90’s. Ever the optimist! March, 2018: I’m doing well. Getting used living alone two years after entering widowerdom almost two years ago. I enjoyed living with Suzanne all those years and would like not to live alone sometime in the future. But at 75 I would not want to be a burden to someone. I remain physically active: walk 3 times a week with Stanford colleagues for a few miles plus lunch. I am happy that I have been skiing with season ticket at Sierra at Tahoe resort. I’m sort of intermediate but no black diamonds for me. Season pass is $139! Hope to ski at 80 when Kirkwood is $10 per season!! Still volunteer teaching science to K through 5 at local schools. Also usher at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall to get exposed to a wide variety of music and dance. Hope we have a 60th reunion in 2020. I’m ready for it. I’m in a photography club and will go to Death Valley in April to photograph the wilder flower bloom. I’d love to travel again but not alone. 5 grandchildren: one college graduate, one junior, one sophomore, one HS junior, and the youngest one (Katee, 15 and 5’10”) a HS sophomore. One is and Eagle Scout! Also a nephew is an Eagle. Lots of fun and a sad note: First it is with greatest sadness that I must tell you that my second oldest sister, Julia Williams Wilson, SHS, 1958, passed away last Tuesday after a heart attack a week earlier. I flew to Berkley, MI, last Saturday and was able to talk with her on Sunday, but her systems were shutting down. She was 76. Her husband, Frank, 87, will have a difficult time without her. E and I went back packing in August. We started at her cabin at Huntington Lake in the Sierras. Then walked with horses carrying the heavy stuff, 5 miles and 1300 feet to Devils Bathtub for a few days. Beautiful and peaceful. In October we went to the Northern California redwoods and Ashland Shakespeare festival with friends. Ashland is a attractive small town. Saw Julius Caesar and other plays. Went steelhead fishing in a drift boat. July, 2017: it has been a wonderful 7 months dating Eleanor whom I me...Expand for more
t at a Stanford Football game last Fall. This year, May 26-June 8: Two weeks in France, Paris, Provence, Giverny..... wow! We'll go back. Last week a few days in romantic Point Reyes National Seashore in a secluded VRBO. Lighthouse and Tomales Point hikes. More to come. Life is good! Kids have been great. They bought me a season ski pass at Sierra at Tahoe. Cheap for us old guys. I'll fool 'em by being a healthy old man. Dividing my time between Stanford, El Dorado Hills and Monterey. 2016 August 1: Gradually recovering from my wife's passing. I will have a celebration of her life with my kids/grandkids and many of her cousins on October 15th in Cassopolis, MI, where her family has a plot. Then I will visit my sister in Berkley, MI, then U of M, October 18-19, and GR on October 19-20, when I will fly home. Anybody up for lunch/dinner on the 19th? Then my life resumes anew. My parents lived 17 and 20 years beyond my current age. What will I do? Hmm... 2016, May 24: Suzanne, my wife of 44 years, passed away today. I miss her.... But she left me with 11 wonderful people including our two kids and their spouses, 5 grandchildren, a sister and husband in Alaska. Of course my my sisters Joan and Liz near me on the SF Peninsula and Julia in is Berkley. Mi. She will be interred in Cassopolis, Michigan later this year. My favorite picture of her is in the Photo Album - Fanning (Gilligan's) Island near the equator below Hawaii. I am reasonably healthy and active, busy thinking about what's next for me after spending 17 years with Suzanne's progressive health problems. 2015-2016: Christmas in Monterey. Went to Rose Bowl/ Rose Parade with Suz. She did pretty well with wheel chair. My cataract surgery in Nov/Jan worked great. 2015 - Thanksgiving: OK "Ditto" is boring.Hopefully my wife and I will make to my Sister Liz's house in Los Altos today Sister Joan also lives nearby in Cupertino,Julia lives in Berkley Michigan. My wife is surviving but she is not very mobile.I do get out to exercise with my retired and un-retired SLAC colleagues. I also manage the off-grid solar system/webcam for our radio control flying field out south of Half Moon Bay - flypcc.org. Check out the webcam/weather web station::flypcc.org/pages/fieldcam.shtml 2015 Ditto 2014 Another year. Still healthy but my wife struggles. We try to travel but usually to doctors offices. 2013 Been retired two years now. 70 1/2 now. Gotta start minimum withdrawals. 2010 Plan to retire in spring 2011. Went to 50th reunion. 2008: 66 next week, got my first social security check but I'm still working - pretty cool. 2007: 65 next month but no plans to retire. Having too much fun. 2006: Ok didn't make it to the 45th. 50 is a nice round number. Still working at SLAC. Still 5 grandchildren, one wife, one house. 2005: Will try to make it to the 45th in August. 5 grandchildren keep us busy. 2000: Hi guys. Sorry I missed the 40th. Maybe I'll make the 50th, after all my first reunion was the 25th. I am still at SLAC doing physics research or should I say management. Three+ grandchildren and only one wife! Send me email. School Science classes and science fairs were good to me. Kept with it throughout my career. At 62 - no plans to retire. - 64, still no plans. College GRJC, U of Michigan - 1964 BS, UC Berkeley - 1973 PhD Workplace Particle Physics Research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Assistant to the Director - all management these days. I make things happen for the younger people to do great science. My motto: It's not a problem it's an opportunity.

What I did on my 74th birthday: Went hiking in the Folsom lake area with Rosalie, Riley, Spencer, Cole and Bentley, the blonde lab. All the pictures were lousy so I include a nice picture of my great camellia blossoms.

October 30th, 2017; The fat's gone... Gonna work on the 6 pack next.
Went to a retirement party at SLAC for three of my fellow physicists from the 60s to today. This photo of me was posted. Taken in 1969, I believe, I was a fresh PhD post doc at SLAC still sporting my long hair, sideburns an
