Stephen's Story

22017 update Currently finishing third book,"The Kof? Getting the Best of Rabbi Fuchs." Previous Bokassa: "ToraHighlight" and " What's in It for Me? Finding Ourselves in Biblical Narratives." Vickie and I celebrated 42years of marriage June 9. She was with me at reunion. We have been blessed with five grandchildren, the latest born June 21, 2014. Another is on the way. After retiring from congregation in 2011, I served 18 months as president of World Union for Progressive Judaism. In that role visited 65 communities on five continents. Priceless experience. Had Second open heart surgery on November 29, 2012 at Cleveland Clinic. Complex operation performed by same surgeon who operated on Jeff Green of Boston Celtics. Was very ill in spring of 2016.Am fine now. Still love to play tennis. Life: After high school I went to Hamilton College. After graduation I spent the next six years studying to become a rabbi which I have been for 34 years. In 1992 I earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Vanderbilt University. In celebration of my first 25 years as a rabbi, the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Insitute of Religon conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1999. I am married to Victoria for 42 and 1/2, years, and we have three children: Leo, 40, Sarah Jenny, 37, and Ben, 34. In March 2005 Sarah married Daniel Moskowitz, and it was one of the great thrills of my life to officiate at my daughter's wedding. Unfortunately, they ar now divorced, but sh is much happier. I had a similar thrill on July 2, 2006 when my son Leo married Dr. Lauren Elizabeth (Liz) Goldman in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Manchester, CT. On July 19, 2007 Liz and Leo presented Vickie and me with our first grandson, Zachary Isaac Goldman Fuchs. We get to San Francisco as often as we can to see him. We ow have five grandchildren and one on the way. In July 1996 I had my first open heart surgery to replace a congenitally defective aoritc valve. I am, thank the Almighty, fine today. We have lived in Columbia, Maryland, Nashville, Tennessee...Expand for more
, and for the past 18 years in West Hartford, CT. I try to relax by continuing to play tennis, exercise, read and do crossword puzzles. I still remember hearing Martin Luther King, Jr. speak at my synagogue in 1962 or '63. I love the opportunities I have had over the years to speak in Black churches. I am particularly grateful for the invitation to d liver the keynote address at the 2017 annual MLK Commemoration in Albuquerque, NM. I think the well integrated atmosphere of EOHS contributes greatly to the feeling of comfort I have in these settings. There are so many people that I went to school with that I wish I could see again. I hope we have another reunion. Of all my teachers, the one I'd love to see more than anyone is Myrla R. Oakley who taught me personal typing. I was terrible at it, but I tried hard, and she was very kind to me. I'll never forget her. I had so many crushes over the years that it is hard to remember them all: Carolyn Hock, Meredith Rommel, Nancy Howat, Nancy Klein--- that's just a partial list. I would love to be able to have lunch with each of them. If I could do one thing over, I'd try to be a little bit less intense than I was as a youngster or even than I am now. I think I'd try to listen more and talk less. In 10 years, I hope to be still retired but still healthy and active. I'm going to get there by trying to eat in a healthy way and continue to exercise. My oldest friend is Dickie Harvest. Even as a child I thought it was great that a black and a whte child played so well together. Over the years my most enduring friendship has been with Don Marino. He is the one EOHS friend with whom I have remained in most frequent touch over the years. What a joy it was to attend Donnie's surprise 70th birthday party in August! Over the last ten years I have become close to Joe Rehyansky. In high school I thought we had nothing in common except a love for Nancy Klein. His was requited; mine was not. He is a great writer and I encourage him to continue to write even today.
