Stephen Heller:

CLASS OF 1964
Newark, NJ

Stephen's Story

After graduating in 1964, I was drafted into the Army in 1966 during the Viet Nam buildup. Fortunately, after spending about 10 months at Ft. Hood, Tx I was sent to Korea for the remaining time, leaving in 1968. I married in 1971 (I think) and had a son (Brian) in 1973. We moved to Long Island where I worked for Entenmanns Bakery as an Accounts Receivable Supervisor for 14 years when my job was consolidated and I was given a years' severance package. I also became divorced a month prior to losing my job so I decided to pack it in and move to Florida. I remarried in 1992 and eventually moved to West Palm Beach. I have two daughters during my second marriage. Madison is 14 and Megan is 11. I am unable to work since I had a severe heart attack on New Years day 2009. Have good days and bad days but am grateful to be alive and watch my girls turning into young wo...Expand for more
men. My wife (Diana) has been great during our tough times. She is the primary income source for our family as I am collecting social security and my pension. I returned home to Newark when my father passed away to settle the estate. Couldn't believe how much things changed. Returned once again in 2008 and found that the house we group up in had been totally demolished and had been replaced by a multi-family home. We also had a second lot next to our home which had 5 garages which my father rented out for income. That lot too had been demolished and another multifamily home had been built on it. Oh well, I guess that's progress. But I'll never forget the wiffle ball games I played on the garage lot with my friends. I guess I could sum up my life by saying there have been a lot of ups and downs. I prefer to focus on the "ups" and keep all of the good memories.
