Stephen's Story
As you may see from the list of schools and military assignments, I graduated from HS in Bakersfield CA, attended 2 years of college there, then another year at University of Colorado. In 1966, I joined the USAF where I spent tours in Turkey, England and Holland. I enjoyed traveling all over Europe in the late-60s, early 70s.
I met my wife Ann in England-we married July 1969. We have 3 grown children and 10 grandkids. We now live in Mulberry, Florida (by Lakeland), between Tampa and Orlando (and less than 2 hours from the Atlantic & Gulf).
Following the military in 1971, we moved to Georgia and I finished college and seminary in Chattanooga TN. I pastored in Georgia, Florida and Michigan and traveled with a missionary agency for several years.
In 1987 I became a professor of Bible and Theology also serving as a Bible college administrator. I was a library director for 10 years and also worked in admissions and financial aid. I've also done corporate training for a law firm. Most recently I worked for Moody Bible Institute as Florida regional director of external studies.
Since 1991, I have been a chaplain with Motorsports Ministries-sports car racing at pro and amateur levels. We serve the American LeMans series, the Grand Am series, Historic Sportscar Racing, and Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). We call it "church in the fast lane." The racing community is a wonderful group of interesting people. Our spiritual support is conducted mostly one-on-one. We always have a chapel service at the races and conduct some annual fund raisers-an annual silent auction and an annual endurance go-kart race. We have a web site and a Google search using "Steve Kearney" AND "Motorsports Ministries" will turn up several results. For the past year my grandson Holden has joined SCCA and participates with me at racing events. He has been leaning to drive with a clutch in my red 2012 Corvette!
In 2004 I served as Chaplain at the 72nd 24 Hours of LeMans in France. It was a grand experience. I have a lot of good memories and had opportunity to serve the drivers and teams there as here in the USA. That year, Ann & I celebrated our 35th anniversary in England. I traveled to LeMans by car via the Euro Tunnel. Brilliant experience!
In 2004, we also had 3 of the 4 Florida hurricanes come right over us. Polk County was quite devastated. We experienced some light damages personally but were fortunate. Our neighbor had a very large oak tree destroy his home. We also experienced Hurricane Anita in 2017 and survived with trees down but no house damages.
My recreation includes following the Denver Broncos and cars that go fast around corners. I've always been into computer technology but nowadays just enjoy staying connected with family and friends. We enjoy traveling and return to Englan...Expand for more
d from time to time. In 2016 we went to Normandy and Ann’s father’s grave in Brucourt Church Cemetery there. He was a D-Day Glider pilot who died on that fateful day. Received an amazingly warm welcome and hope to return for the 75th remembrance in June of 2019.
We were in Bakersfield in January 2005-my first time back since 1965. It was great to see the town and find a few places I recognized. We try to find a way for Ann to travel back to England to see her friends & family and we usually spend some time in Denver where my family lives. As you may guess, our grandkids get the bulk of our free time directed to them.
In 2006 I became a hospice chaplain with Good Shepherd Hospice, an amazing job & ministry, working with a caring and talented team of nurses, home health aids, counselors and volunteers. Chaplains provide spiritual care for terminally ill patients and their families. However, due to Medicare cuts, I was layed off again in Aug 2008. I participated in the ACPE Certification courses for chaplains who work with the medical field. Good Shepherd is part of Chapters Healthcare based in Tampa but my work is in Polk County with our office in Lakeland. I briefly worked with LifePath Hospice in Tampa, working in 8 nursing homes. When a door opened in July 2011, Compassionate Care Hospice came into Florida and I moved to work with them. It was an interesting move for me for 4 years. I also worked for 2 years with VITAS Healthcare and returned to Good Shepherd as a part-time Chaplain in 2017. I continue to serve in that capacity with GSH and to serve with Motorsports Ministries.
My wife retired in 20101 as a senior bank teller. During a period when I traveled for about 4 years, she was our primary financial support. Even after I was working again with hospice, we relied on her job for insurance and as a way to put away for retirement. I can't say enough about how supportive she has been as I have worked in ministries that were expensive to conduct and no way to get rich. Still, we have survived financially and testify of God's provision in our lives! In Feb 2007 Ann had open-heart surgery to replace the aortic valve and do a bypass. She has recovered well. In Dec 2007 I had surgery on my neck for the 2nd time and have had to adjust my life to deal with some physical concerns.
I have a great group of friends on Facebook with a focus on my personal activities in both chaplaincies. Once again, search for "Steve.Kearney" There are also pictures of the family. I also participate in LinkedIn, Twitter and a little bit on Instagram. I am not as active on social media as I have been in the past but you can find me if you look.
I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me from my school or military days or any of the work places. See you at the races!-Steve Kearney
