Sterling's Story

Sterling's Story Well, it has been an interesting journey so far since High School and I am sure there is much more to come. I am sure anyone who knew me in High School would remember me as "the bookworm" - that is, if anyone remembered me at all! I wasn't exactly "Miss Popularity" back then... Gladly I can say that I have changed quite a bit since high school - hopefully to the point that noone would recognize me from my High School Yearbook picture! Although I just took a look at my driver's license and there does not seem to be that much improvement lately! When I left High School, I mainly worked, partied (to make up for lost time!) and continued my education. I went to the University of Colorado and got a degree in Anthropology with a minor in Archaeology. I worked as an archaeologist at one point early on in my career - truly the brochure looked a lot better than reality! Indiana Jones, it was not! After college, I left Boulder and became a Social Worker in Georgia and started my own business working with the Georgia Superior Courts on adoption cases. I finally left Georgia and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida which was about 15 years ago. In Florida, I immediately began working for a laboratory in a Healthcare Corporation that focused on patients with kidney disease. I have continued to work in this field for the past 15 years. Twelve years ago I started my own business working with pharmaceutical companies in Research and Project Management, focusing on conducting clinical trials with pharmaceutical companies who are developing new medications for kidney disease patients. I continue to work in this field. Unfortunately the current economy has hit the pharmaceuticals industry and research pretty hard. Business is sadly not booming, but I am still hanging in there with my business and continue to conduct research studies. Still sounds like I am the "bookworm"! I guess I always was a nerd and continue to be one deep down - at least in my professional life! The good news is that 13 years ago, I met my husband who is in pharmaceutical sales - and he is most definately NOT a nerd! This has been a good thing for me as it turns out! We met at a bagel shop and we had lived within 4 miles of each other for ten years and never ran into each other even once! We have no children (unless we count my Himalayan cats as offspring)! My husband has two sons from a previous marriage. One of his son's, Ryan, who is 24, has become quite the cell phone mogul - he is working for Verizon as a Regional Manager currently and making more income than Mark and I combined! What is up with that?!!! No complaints though! We are happy that he is not sleeping on the couch! Mark calls his other son, Chad, "The Project"! Enough said about that! I think you get the picture! When I fi...Expand for more
lled out that goofey Q&A on this website, they really did not have a lot of categories listed of what I really like to do in my spare time which is travel (everywhere and anywhere as frequently as possible!), write poetry, watch baseball - specifically the Boston Red Sox, home improvement projects, gardening and landscaping, buying things I don't need on EBay and finally, pretending that I am really interested in my husband's favorite hobby which is playing tennis! I have recently taken up learning how to play the banjo in my spare time. I have wanted to learn how to play banjo since High School - probably influenced by that scene in "Harold and Maude" where Harold is up on the cliffside dinking around playing one. In spite of the rumors, take it from me - playing the banjo is harder than it looked in the movie "Deliverance"! Not that good at it yet, but getting better every day and having a great time as I learn it. And, another claim to fame, I might just be the only living person playing the banjo who still has all of her own teeth! When my husband and I got married many eons ago, we sat down and wrote up a "Bucket List" of all of the places to see and things that we want to do before we "Kick the Bucket". We are lucky to be able to travel quite a lot and we have been able to go to many places on our Bucket List including Italy, France, England, Ireland, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Hawaii and on a really great cruise to Alaska. A couple of years ago we went to the Kentucky Derby, and the US Open Tennis Tournament. Last year we swam with the Dolphins. This year we are going back to France in October. This time I will get to visit Mont St. Michel, something that has been on my list since High School! Unfortunately the economy is so bad right now that the exchange rate will probably make this the most expensive trip we have ever taken thanks to our Congress and the European economy. We plan to live soley on wine while we are over there to keep expenses down! One of my crazy Bucket List items is to go to Mongolia to pet a lYak! Not sure why this is so important to me - probably just because I like the word "Yak"! Sounds like a very intriguing creature to me! This year I am dismayed to report that I am turning 50, much to my disappointment! Can anyone tell me "What Happened With all of that Time???? I am now receiving invitations to join AARP (of which I promptly throw in the trash)! Everyone keeps saying "Sterl - you are not so old - 50 is really the new 40!" Oh, sure! Yippee! Well - enough about me! Thanks for reading my epic novel about my life and times. I do hope that life has been good to you and continues to bring you much health and happiness. And I wish us all renewed properity in the coming months and years ahead. Take care!
