Steve's Story

Life Hi to all of the Class of 62 (and the Hayvenhurst Ave grads of 56. Life has been full! Some wonderful Hi's and a few very lows, with far too many visits to the operating rooms of the US. The quick rundown of the highlights: Jobs - sorta in chronologic order During high school. Door to door map deliverer for Bekins Van & Storage Janitor and stripe straightener in a garment factory - Carefree Togs in Van Nuys. Burger chef at the Sirloin Burger in Panorama City (with one of my best buddies - Steve Lesser) During college at Cal Berkely: Gofer on Dad's TV show in Hollywood. House painter in the Valley Tour guide at Cal Berkely Travel agent in West Hollywood After 3 years in college, I felt a sudden urge for something other than homework, tests and studying. I worked at USC Med for a year before starting med school as a Lab Asst and animal trainer and keeper - monkeys, rats, pidgeons, chinchillas, dogs, cats and a Minah bird During med school: Volunteer at Women's Health Clinic in the bario of East LA. Member of East LA Health Task Force advocating improved health care for the minorities in east LA. There wasn't much time for outside jobs during med school. Post Grad: Internship in Internal Medicine at LA Big County Hospital in east LA. After one year of internal med training, I wasn't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up. After a wrong turn on the San Bernardino Freeway I left my surfboard at Dad's and took a job at the Student Health Clinic at the State Univ of NY at Stonybrook on Long Island. I then trained ex military medical corpsman (all Vietnam vets) to be Physician's Assistants for two years. After two more years of residency in Family Medicine, I wandered to Elmira NY in southern upstate NY community to be a small town family doc. By then, my surfboard had been donated to a homeless surfer in Manhattan Beach. I realized my ties to the Valley were weakening. 15 years later, I...Expand for more
made another shift into left field and became an itinerant lecturer on foolishness circuit. It was near stand up comedy, tho I was afraid to call it that. I kept up this silly trade for 20 years, in addition to being a family doc. My lectures gave me a chance to display my talent as the worst professional juggler now listed in Google. Ask me about my World Record in juggling. A zig into volunteering at the Zuni Indian Reservation in New Mexico and a 15 year stint as a family med instructor at the med school in Syracuse NY until my early retirement in 2005. Along the way, I married Ann, my college sweetheart. Yeah I still pined a bit for Sally Walker, my high school love, but she found greener pastures at UCLA. Ann and I had two wonderful kids: Danny is now 37, a Cornell Univ grad in architecture and lives in Taos, NM. His twins Rhonan and Larking live with their mom in Sedona, AZ. Julie studied acting at Cornell and the New Actors Studio in New York City. Her best role so far is as Mom to Connor, 6, and Willow, 3. They live with husband Jeff Speiser in Ann Arbor, MI. Jeff is a great soninlaw since he laughs at all my corney jokes. I gave a guest lecture at Cornell Univ in 1981 for a class on medical ethics for Prof Andrea Parrot, PhD. It must have been a good lecture because Andrea and I married in 1985. We have Andrew, who is heading to Oberlin Univ. Music conservatory for piano and violoin in Sept 07. Ryan is 16 and a senior in high school and principal cellist for the Ithaca High orchestra in Ithaca, NY where we live. Andrea and I just celebrated our 22nd anniversary. My passions these days are genealogy and lousy golf. I ran out of my own relatives to search and now help friends and occasonal passersby with their family history. I also get to be Grampa Steve as often as possible. Well, that wasn't too short, was it. I hope to see lots of you at the reunion in October. With a smile, Steve
