Steve's Story

After our Junior year in 1966, I joined the U.S. Air Force June 16th. Basic Training was at Lackland A.F.B. in Texas. Following Basic, I was chosen for Jet Aircraft Maintenance Tech. School at Sheppard A.F.B. in Wichita Falls, Texas. Upon completion of training, I was stationed at McDill A.F.B. in Tampa, with the 46th T.A.C. Fighter Squadron - 15th T.A.C. Fighter Wing, as an F-4C Phantom " Crew Chief " for three years. In March of 1969, I received orders of transfer to Eglin A.F.B. to form up with the first F4-E Phantom outfit to go to Vietnam, the 4th T.A.C. Fighter Squadron. We arrived at Danang A.B., Vietnam April 12,1969, and became part of the 366th T.A.C. Fighter Wing, known as " The Gunfighters ". This is when I was honored to have been my Squadron Commander's, Lt. Colonel Jim McCarthy's ,Crew Chief of my F-4," Rebel Yell ". The goal was finally achieved. Dreams do come true, by making the commitment to do your very best!. orton A.F.B., in San Bernadeno, Cal. It was time for active duty discharge. Returning home to Largo, Fla., I sold my home, and returned to my hometown of Brookhaven, Ms. to go to college on the G.I. Bill. While at Copiah-Lincoln, I met my wife of forty years, Dianne Townsend. We married in Brookhaven and moved to West Palm Beach in 1972, where I trained and became a Photo Offset Lithographer for The Palm Beach Post - Times. In October of 73', we had our first son Kyle. What a blessing! In 1974, we moved back to a calm life in the country and built our present home out of Brookhaven. In 1976, our second son Kelly was born, and in 1978 our third son Kory was born. They are all married and have one child each. Korben, Ava and Madisyn. Over the later years I spent almost twenty years as a Mechanical Tech. for Shell Oil and Halliburton as a Field Tech. in oil production. I retired in 2005, and spend quality time with my Grandchildren, every chance I get. Thank You Lord!!! Steve Altman
