You know about those military recruiters that come to school? Well back in '61 they came and me, Rick Gatter,Jim Kolbo and a few others fell for their BS and we joined the Navy Reserve and attended weekend mtgs for over a year and and along came the Cuban Missle Crisis and away I went! I was assigned to the USS Coral Sea CVA 43 and spent 2 years aboard the carrier. It was the best thing that could of happened to me considering that I could have been drafted in the Army and sent to Viet Nam .

un times was spending 2 weeks in Sidney Australia and being home ported in the San Francisco area. My tour was up Oct,22 1964 and I came home. The neat thing was that I did,nt have to attend anymore weekend mtgs. because they were overloaded with new members joining up to escape the draft.
This fall (Oct.2006) I attended my first Coral Sea reunion with Henry "Bill" Banks in San Diego and met with crewmates that I have not seen in over 40 years, it was a great 4 days.
After all these years, I can say, my joining the Navy was the best thing that I could have done as a young man and I have no regrets.
