Steve's Story
Life
Mr. Borunda is a proven and effective executive. His background reflects leadership in varied business enterprises, non-profit entities and political organizations. From his experience beginning a home-based business to overseeing budgets in excess 1.3 billion dollars Mr. Borunda has been able to navigate through many challenges and opportunities. His leadership always encourages the best to come out in individuals and he works well with others.
He is a former Maryland Deputy Secretary of State and currently the President/CEO of U.S. Hispanic Youth Entrepreneur Education (USHYEE) a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Mr. Borunda is the father of five children ranging in age from 4 to 15 and has been married to his wife Sharon for 22 years.
As a former member of the Board of Education in Baltimore County, Mr. Borunda was part of a team that was accountable for managing fiscal and personnel resources with a budget in excess of a billion dollars. Areas of oversight include: facility operations, maintenance, construction, procurement and labor relations. His committee responsibilities include the Board of EducationÂs Building and Contracts Committee.

s Committee. He has gained a keen awareness of the problems and concerns of Maryland businesses through his travels around the state listening to business owners from many industries. In this capacity, Mr. Borunda offered his advice and counsel to the Governor and to the Secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development.
In 2004, the Governor appointed Mr. Borunda to the GovernorÂs Commission on Minority Business Enterprise Reform. As Chair of the Certification Committee many of the recommendations his Committee made were implemented and have since become Maryland law. The Small Business Reserve Program (SB 904) is a direct result of the work Mr. Borunda and the rest of the Commission initiated.
Mr. Borunda initiated an effort to help at risk 10th and 11th grade minority students begin to think about business and the High School to College Continuum. This non-profit organization, U.S. Hispanic Youth Entrepreneur Education (USHYEE) is currently focused on two statewide programs, Hispanic Youth Symposium and the Hispanic Youth Achievement Forum. This effort has gained the attention and support of Maryland State Department of Education. USHYEE also has the attention of the White House Office of Excellence in Hispanic Education and the U.S. Department of Education.
