Steve's Story
Life
In 2003 I retired from 33 years of public school teaching; first as a high school music director, then counselor in high schools. I am still involved in my real estate business.
Married my second wife in 1985, she was also a music teacher. We had no kids (since we were always teaching other people's kids. Anyway, all that changed quickly ... after being on the waiting list for more than a year, we adopted a baby girl on the same day I retired, and named her "Nicole." Crazy? I tell folks I did the world a favor by not being a father until I grew up.
Our newest Golden Retriever is now 5 and doesn't like to be far from Nicole. Its amazing to see how children and dogs bond. She crawls all over him and he loves her for it.
Still live in Richmond VA (since 1970). I still love boating, and have enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay for all of those years. We keep a boat in a sleepy little town and harbor called, Urbanna, which is on the Rappahannock River, one of the prettiest tributaries to the Ches. Bay."
For for while I conducted the Petersburg Community Chorus. And in 2004 I founded the Virginia Benefit Chorale, which gives 6 - 8 benefit performance each year to selected non-profit humanitarian organizations. Visit us at vbcsings.org
Update Dec 2007:
Nicole is now 4.5 and already smarter that I am. She is quite a conversationalist which makes her great company for me. (Personally, I didn't really know what I was doing until she could speak just a little bit.) Yeah, I know you can hold them and feel their little hand in yours, and so on. But I still like to talk. So she is a greater ...Expand for more
joy for me every day. My wife, Debbie and I are lucky to have her and we know it.
The VBC raised thousands last year for charities that engaged us as a fund raising event.
Love to hear what others are up to.
Update Fall 2009:
Nicole is now in Kindergarten and loves it. We still go swimming at the Y once a week, she has always loved the water, and swims like a fish. She has started Rock climbing. The Y has a rock climbing wall where you get belaied so if you fall you just dangle from a rope rather than crash. Good fun!
Update Spring 2014:
After 30 years of marriage, my 2nd wife left, and tried to take my daughter Nicole with her. (NOT) So after three years in court, I am now broke, but have joint custody of Nicole. Just turned 11, and we went to Disney World for this spring break. Nicole is a daddy's girl, and there is no way this daddy was going to let her go. We still do all that we did and more. Nicole goes back and forth, and seems to understand that she has two parents who love her (but don't love each other) and the rules are different from one place to the other. She was born hard wired to be fair in all things. and she doesn't even think of getting into the crossfire. Smart girl!. School is over for the summer at the end of this week and we will leave for sometime in New Hampshire.
Being retired and having an 11 year old daughter is like having the very best part of fatherhood, and grandfatherhood. I am old enough to know how to relax and be a parent at the same time, and I don't have to wonder what the father will say about anything because I am the father. Pretty neat, huh?
