Steve's Story
I remember wonderful teachers like Mr. King (calculus), Mrs. Caplan (British Lit.), Mrs. Conlee (yearbook and advanced composition), Mrs. McChesney (Latin), Mrs. DiPaolo (Spanish). Then a bunch of us went an hour northeast to UGA, where I roomed with Evan Chipouras, dated Edie McLaurin, worked on the college paper (so did Edie, and she went on to become a journalist), and majored in English. College ended too soon, so I went to Duke to get an M.A. in English. As that year went on, though, I was burned out on school and wanted a way to explore the world and make a difference. So I applied to the Baptist Journeyman program and was sent to Hong Kong, where I taught English, made dozens of wonderful Chinese friends (and some British and American friends, too), and learned Cantonese. I spent 4 years in Hong Kong. Afterwards, I went to Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where I pastored an inner-city church and met my wife--we're still together 24 years later, with 3 daughters. Our next move was to Madison, Wisconsin, where I earned my Ph.D. in English. We loved Madison--a beautiful college town with lakes and progressive po...Expand for more
litics. I was hired by Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis as a professor of English in 1992, and we've been here since. We live in a historic neighborhood on the east side of town; our daughters are growing up fast (the youngest is 12, the oldest in college, the middle one about to graduate from high school). My wife graduates with her master's of library science this August; she already works happily in a small downtown branch of the public library. We have good friends here and try to keep peace, justice, reading and art alive in this conservative but rapidly changing midwest city. (Hey, Indiana supported Obama!) Sadly, my parents have both died, my father most recently in April 2008. My brother Ken still lives in Atlanta and my sister Margie lives in Asheville (both are CK alums, too).
Old high school classmate and friend Steve Spence has lived in Indianapolis longer than I have, and we only re-discovered each other last year! I don't keep up with many other old classmates, except for the occasional email. A shout out to any of you who remember me: email me if you'd like by searching for me on the web.
