Harold Steven's Story
Better known as Steve - During the fall of my senior year at Annapolis transferred to graduate Fall 1970 from ST James H.S. Ferndale. Went to Wayne State University for a year under a tuition scholarship. Like many of the 70’s didn’t quite know what to do. So, like an idiot gave up a full-tuition scholarship to board a plane to Lackland AFB, Texas. Upon arriving at an ungodly hour was introduced to that father figure who absolutely didn’t care one iota about my “feelings”. Who immediately commence to adjust my outlook on life. Remember a lot of running and yelling. For eight years found enjoyment as a military medic and orthopedic tech, traveling from Maine to Washington State. Married and with five kids calling me father – accepted commissioning in the US Navy as a Supply Officer. I celebrated “kind of” my first year in the Navy with my sixth and last child. While with the Navy traveled to Europe, East Africa, and even Beirut Lebanon. Rotating duty locations from at sea amphibious operations and training commands. Retirement came too soon in 1992. After military retirement spent a great six years in the Community College system – ending up as a Director of Continuing Education. Education is a very rewarding field where you can make a real impact. Unfortunately, it’s not necessarily the most monetarily rewarding career. ...Expand for more
So, in 1998 I jumped into the world of commercial enterprise. Beginning in 1999 immersing my professional career in the world of telecom. Managing sales teams and eventually becoming a Manager of Government Affairs. Before retiring once again, awarded two Master's degrees, finishing just one semester shy of the MBA. Stopped pursuing the third degree in 2011 when I retired from Telecom. Since then, have spent my time working on projects that have fed my interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. In 2017 - once again returned to the world of academia. Currently the Program Coordinator at Old Dominion University’s Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. With the University I have found great enjoyment in helping innovators take their ideas and turn them into enterprises. Being around highly creative people keeps me young. Every day I get to meet entrepreneurs in the work we do for the Commonwealth of Virginia along with a growing international NATO community. In any case, if you would like to connect on LinkedIn you can find me listed as stevegoad out of Virginia at ODU.
Remarried in 1990 to Sondra a Retired RN, former Nursing School Professor, Potter, Painter and general keeps me in line. Just moved to Elkton, VA working remotely for the University in a program to help rural innovators create new lines of business.
