Steve's Story

Immediately after high school I enlisted in the US Navy. Spent four years as a hospital corpsman (medic) and was honorably discharged as an HM2 - Petty Officer Second Class (E5) in December, 1975. Duty stations included: Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL; Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA; US Naval Station Dispensary (part of the Guam Naval Regional Medical Center), Guam, Marianas Islands; and, First Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Pendleton, CA, where I served as a Field Medical Service Corpsman with various USMC infantry companies (7th Marine Regiment in Camp San Mateo and 5th Marine Regiment in Camp Horno). After the service, I returned to Salem, bought a house, worked at Roanoke Electric Steel Corp. and the old White Motor Corp. in Human Resources. Married the former Vicki May from Tazewell HS (class of '70) and Radford College (BS class of '73 and MS class of '81) in October, 1977. In 1980 our first son (Alan) was born. That same year I decided to finally go back to school and utilize my GI Bill benefits to get a college degree. I enrolled at Radford University and finished my business degree requirements in December, 1983. After graduation from college, I accepted a job with Kimberly-Clark Corp. in Hendersonville, NC, where we remained until 1990. Our second son (Aaron) was born during this period of our lives. Since 1990, I've been on the corporate merry-go-round chasing the brass ring. te ladder. Since North Carolina, we have lived in Ogden, Utah; Riverside, California; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (two different times); Green Bay, Wisconsin; Bloomington, Indiana; and now, Rock Hill, SC. I finally retired as Vice President of Operations for my employer in February, 2016 in Rock Hill., SC. My wife of 44 years, Vicki, retired in 2018 and we enjoy time now with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson (Axton Gusse), who also live in Rock Hill. Our eldest son, Alan, returned to school to finally complete his Bachelor's degree (late bloomer like me I guess). He graduated with a BS in Human Resources Development from Indiana State University in December 2010 and now works as a Program Manager for Metasys Technologies, Inc. Our youngest son, Aaron, graduated from Indiana State University in May, 2009 with a BS in Professional Aviation Flight Technology. He is a Airline Transport Pilot with his multi-engine and instrument ratings and a Certified Flight Instructor. He is also licensed to fly sea planes and gliders. He worked for many years as a certified flight instructor in a small city in northern Luzon, Philippines Islands and then moved to a large flight school in Subic Bay, Aaron has been flying privately owned Gulfstream jets for high net worth individuals throughout Asia since 2015. Vicki and I enjoy travel and we visit tropical destinations, usually in the Caribbean or Mexico, on average twice per year. We have fallen in love with Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and the Riviera Maya of Mexico and recently returned from another visit there.
