Steve's Story

Life I attended Stanford University, and after switching majors several times, got a B.A. in Chinese in 1968. I went on to graduate school in Anthropology, also at Stanford, and after several visits to Taiwan got my Ph.D. in 1974, after which I came to the University of Washington, where I have been on the faculty ever since. essor of Anthropology at the UW and Curator of Asian Ethnology at the Burke Museum. I met my wife Barbara at Stanford, and we were married in 1968. Barbara went to medical school and residency at the UW, practiced obstricts and gynecology in Seattle, and is now retired. We have two daughters and a new granddaughter. My interests include open-water swimming, hiking, organic gardening, learning languages, and the Seattle Mariners.
