Steve's Story
Life
With the afterglow of underachievement still fresh on me from my Catholic Central years, I began my adult life working a string of dead-end jobs. I married in '76 and my wife, Heidi, gave birth to three girls (not all at once, thankfully).
My post-high school avocations included music -- I taught myself to play guitar and mandolin. I also became serious about my Christian faith and took up the study of theology. (I actually spent one year as a church pastor in the mid-1990s.)
By the time I reached my 30s, we were tired of my go-nowhere employment. I enrolled at Grand Valley, got my degree and entered the field of journalism (got a burst of career inspiration after the Dallas Morning News paid me $70 for an op-ed column). For the next 11 years, I worked at several newspapers as a reporter, religion editor, columnist and managing...Expand for more
editor.
Since 1999, I've been writing marketing materials and creating electronic communications for a Fortune-500 subsidiary in Atlanta.
In addition to Georgia and Michigan, we've lived in Texas and Illinois -- far too many moves for one lifetime, as my kids remind me often.
My oldest daughter is married. Second oldest lives in Alabama. I'm a card-carrying Libertarian who is dismayed at the direction of our society. (Does "hell in a handbasket" suggest a particular sentiment?) I love to read and listen to classical music.
As is the case for most people my age, life seems to be flying past at a breakneck clip. I have about $48.64 saved for my retirement. I expect to be working until they pry these cold, dead fingers from my computer mouse.
That's OK, though. God has granted us a very blessed life. I'm grateful for it.
