Steve's Story

So, here I am! It's 2009! Since this is classmates.com, I will bring you up to speed on my life since graduation. Oct 94 -- I joined the Air Force. My first assignment was at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama. While there, I made some good friends, drank lots of beer and had some great experiences. I was there for 4 years until I separated and became a civilian again...this would only be temporary!! Shortly after I left the Air Force, I realized I had made a big mistake. So, I decided to join again. This time, I was considered Prior Service and my options were either become a Recruiter or a Military Drill Instructor. Well, since I didn't want to march around in the hot San Antonio sun all day teaching trainees to march and fold t-shirts -- I decided to take the recruiter option instead. So, in June of '99 I re-enlisted back into the Air Force and went off to Recruiting School in San Antonio, TX. After completing my school, I was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX. MY OFFICE was in the Sun Rise Mall. There were two malls in Corpus -- the one where everyone shopped at...and the one where old people go to mallwalk -- GUESS WHERE I WAS?! While in Texas, I was very successful and was recommended by my supervisor and the superintendent of my Recruiting Squadron for a career progression assignment within recruiting. I put in my request for the job I wanted and they gave it to me. So, in 2003, my next assignment was as a Military Liaison (Job Counselor) at the Jacksonville, Florida MEPS. This was a fun job and I almost can't believe I got paid to do it. I interviewed applicants...Expand for more
all day and then placed them into jobs based on their physical and test scores. While stationed in Jacksonville, I submitted my resume to an Air National Guard unit in Georgia to be a Recruiter for them. I was hired and in 2006, I left the Air Force and joined the Georgia Air National Guard as the Recruiting and Retention NCO for the 224th Joint Communications Support Squadron in Brunswick, Georgia. I have been there going on 3 years now. So, overall, I have over 14 years in the Air Force/Air National Guard and I am going to retire in 6 years. Other than my career, my life has had had it's ups and downs, hits and misses. I've loved, I've lost. I got married when I was in Texas and I was divorced before I moved to Jacksonville. I have since re-married to my beautiful wife Michelle and we are going strong. I have no children and do not want any. I do have 2 cats, Nilla and Tucker. They are my babies!! I guess the only true sad thing that has happened to me is the death of my sister Susie on March 29, 2001. It was a day that I will never forget and my life has been forever changed by it. It has gotten easier over time -- but, there isn't a day when I don't think about her. Somedays it's just for a second and sometimes it's longer. The only thing I know is that she would have wanted us to go on and be happy with our lives and that's all I can really do. So, other than that, my life has been pretty good. I have a wife, job, friends, roof over my head, money in the bank, health, and the future is looking brigher everyday. I hope everyone who reads this is doing well.
