JOHN's Story
Howdy Howdy! Thank you for taking a look at my profile. I attended W.P. Davidson my first 3 years of HS. I played football my first two years, and played in the marching band all 3 years. I moved to Albany, GA at the beginning of my senior year and went to Dougherty HS. I attended Albany Jr. College for two years. I then went to GA Southern and graduated in 1977 with a BS in Journalism. While at Southern, I was on the student radio station. I got a part-time job at a local commercial radio station and went full-time after graduation. I worked as a DJ in Statesboro, Vidalia, the top station in Orlando, the top station in Jacksonville, FL and made it to Atlanta in 1983 where I was on-air at Z-93 until 1990 when I got fired (happens to EVERY DJ---LOL!). I was then offered a Sunday morning show on 96 Rock with Alex Cooley, the legendary concert promoter. We took it from dead last to #1 in the ratings. It was so cool to talk every Sunday with the guy who brought so many great concerts to the ATL and play whatever I wanted. I was also working with TBS as a promo announcer about that time and was the voice of the ATL Braves spots (Miracle Season) along with all the movies they ran. A number of ATL talent agents repped me and I was the voice of all Macy's radio and TV commercials in the Southeast and 1996 Olympic tick...Expand for more
et sales. I also was the voice of the Travel Channel, Home Shopping Network, HGTV and DIY Network. I am still doing voiceovers for a living. It's hard to walk away from a gig where people pay you to talk. I also still DJ parties, doing weddings and corporate gigs. I lived in Marietta until 1998 and then moved to the home of Alan Jackson, Newnan, GA. I got married in 1993, divorced in 2013. I have a son who is a GA Tech engineer; his wife is a Tech engineer, too. And I have a daughter who is single and works with a major marketing firm. Both kids live in the ATL area. No grandkids. Yet. I am thankful that I am healthy and can still do a lot of physical activities. I love fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, hiking and just being outdoors. Favorite movie: Jeremiah Johnson. Favorite TV show: Pat McAfee Live (ESPN and YouTube). I've recently been binge watching on Peaky Blinders on Netflix (plan to watch the new documentary on the We Are The World recording session soon). Having been a Top 40 AND Rock Radio DJ, I have heard and enjoyed a lot of music through the years. Petty, Stones, Foos, ZZ Top, Clapton, Dierks, Toby (RIP), Steve Miller, are my faves, I love guitar driven rock but I also loves me some funk. If you went to Davidson ('73) or Dougherty ('73), please drop me a line. It would be nice to catch up. Peace
