Steve's Story

After graduating (barely!) from Satellite High in '76 I hung around for a while, surfing in the daytime, and working at Peg Leg's at night. But that got old after a while, the waves weren't always there and riding my bicycle to and from work kind of sucked when it was cold and/or raining. So I went back to school,(something I swore I'd never do) and got an AS degree from Tampa Tech, and then got a job with Harris Semiconductor and moved back to Melbourne in September of '78. Spent a lot of years playing, refereeing, and coaching soccer, lived mostly along the south county beaches near the water and the waves. Spent enough money at Brassy's to keep them in business, took a lot of classes at BCC (I may have set a record for credit hours accumulated without ever actually graduating!), learned to scuba dive, gave up golf, and generally had a lot of fun. Met Leslie in '88, we got married in '89. We bought a house in the Lake Washington area in '91, just two weeks before Shane was born. Since I was so busy being a new dad I stopped coaching soccer but still played a bit. Jason was born in '93. When Shane turned 5 I unretired from soccer coaching and I coached his and/or Jason's teams, among others for the next dozen or so years, as well as serving on the board of one of the local youth soccer clubs. For a number of years Leslie and I took a cruise every year while my Mom would come and stay with the boys (we'd also take a trip somewhere with the boys each summer, when they were out of school). The last couple of years we've changed it up a bit and stayed on St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, instead. That place is heaven on earth! Now Shane and Ja...Expand for more
son are seniors and sophomores respectively, at Eau Gallie High. When they each turned twelve they got their scuba certification, so that is a full family activity now. Both boys referee soccer games - Shane quit playing a couple of years ago to concentrate on academic activities and he's been very successful at that - just named a National Merit Scholar! Jason still plays, both club ball and on the high school team. I turned 50 last summer and we all went to Cozumel for 10 days of diving, relaxing, exploring, and just getting one (possibly) last big family trip in before the college years begin. These days I don't have to spend as much time driving them everywhere, so I actually have free time occasionally - I get to give more time and attention to Champ our lab, and might even get around to working on the many projects that need to be done in and around the house. We all try participate in the community by volunteering for school or fund raising activities, so we don't have much time to be bored. My soccer playing these days is limited to lunchtime pick up games twice a week when I'm not too injured to participate! I decided to give golf another try since I wasn't as likely to get as frustrated as I did when I was younger. And I don't. I certainly don't play any better, and normally don't play more than a couple of times a year, if that, but I can enjoy being outside with friends, having a beer or two, and laughing at just how much I still suck at this awful game! On weekends I can usually be found tending to a grill or smoker in the backyard - I love to BBQ! If you're in the area and smell something really good, stop by and grab a plate!
