Steve's Story

Life Married in 1979 to Margaret (Mindi) Parker... Mindi and I have been blessed with two great kids; Kathryn (27) who graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English Literature(2004) and then UCSD (2006) with her Masters in Education. She is a teacher at Poway High School and Department Chair of the English Department. Kyle (24) graduated from Cal State San Marcos with a degree in Political Science. He started law school Aug 2009. Kyle is working on a book that when published is sure to hit the "Best Seller" list. His writing is so descriptive his words bring tears to my eyes every time he reads a new piece from his work (Due to continued laughter). Mindi is an aide at Abraxis High School (Continuation High School for Poway Unified Schools). Her principal is none-other than; Rudy Casciado... any one remember Rudy?? (9th grade math teacher, Frosh Baseball coach???) Mindi likes helping those students who do not fit into the traditional educational setting. It takes a special person and they are lucky to have her. I served three terms as a Trustee for the Poway Unified School District from 1994 through 2006. Retired after 12 years and am through with politics!!!! Mindi and I live in the Rancho Pensaquitos area of San Diego where we are care-givers to Mindi's parents; Junior and Betty Parker. My father-in-law is a retired Chief of the Los Angeles City Fire Department; retired in 1978 after 32 years; he is a WWII Vet, serving with the 101st Airborne's Screaming Eagles; Silver Star recipient and a survivor of the "Battle of the Bulge" in WWII. (My father-in-law passed away Aug 3, 2009) In our spare time (whatever that is) Mindi and I enjoy camping and traveling. We are on our second tent trailer (wore the first one out) and whenever possible head off to the mountains or beach for rest and relaxation. We have been fortunate to have travelled the United States with our children and have seen a vast majority of America in doing so. Camping trips; north through California, Oregon, Washington and into British Columbia and Victoria Island; Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico; Nevada, Utah; Texas, Illinois, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming, Wisconsin (The Dells); Pennsylvania, New York and parts in between; Trips to Boston, Washington DC, New Jersey, ...Expand for more
Florida, England, Scotland... Trips together as a family... School My biggest crush? Surely you jest? Not sure that would be appropriate.... But she is still a great looking person and a wonderful mother to her children and wife to her loving husband. Yes, we are in touch and talk once in a blue moon. Teacher who inspired? Mrs. K and Mr. Ramos. Would I do it all over again if possible? ONLY if I could do it knowing what I know now... Fun times.... Workplace I have been a San Diego Police Officer since 1979 (30 years April 30, 2009; how time flies). Currently a Sergeant in Internal Affairs. Have spent time in patrol, Training Division, Juvenile Administration and Investigations (Narcotics, Robbery, Homicide, General Area Command Investigations). Promoted to Sergeant in 1992. Have worked as a patrol supervisor as well as a supervisor in investigations; Area Command, Vice and now Internal Affairs. Spent time as a Union Representative. Serving as Vice-President of the SDPOA in the 80's as well as a stint as the VP/GM of the Association from 2004-2006. Talk about "No-Win" situation. Glad to be away from all of that. Currently in the DROP which is short for "Deferred Retirement Option Plan" and will retire with 33 years service, June 12, 2012. As they say, "a couple of bad hair days in a row and I'm done" (Hide the mirrors - every day is a bad hair day for me). This has been a great career and lot of fun; but would not want to start my career over in today's day and age. Have any of you tried working with the Gen X and Y kids??? Lord help us all!!!! (They said that about us too so I am sure things will work out fine; but really?) Not sure what retirement holds but hope to find something to keep me occupied. Mindi has said I have to be out the door by 9 and can't come back til 4.... Leaves me lots of options.... Who wants to go hiking? Fishing? Camping? Motorcycle ride? Mountain bike ride? Hang at the beach? Coffee? Poker anyone? Remember to laugh; don't take life or yourself so serious you can't laugh at yourself and what life throws your way. Smile often and remember to say "please" and "thank-you"... it is the little things in life that matter... but don't let those "little things" become obstacles to happiness... keep life in perspective...
