Steve's Story
Steve Rombouts - Highlights since High School"
1973 - Graduated from NMU; was commissioned a Lieutenant in the US Army;
was assigned to the 8th Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Hood, Texas.
1977 - Was assigned to Headquarters, US Army Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany;
was promoted to Captain.
1978 - Had a personal meeting with Albert Speer, Germany's Minister of Armaments
during WWII, in his home in Heidelberg.
- Visited Robert Browning's grave in Westminster Abbey, London.
- Visited the Church of the Order of Teutonic Knights in Vienna.
- First attempt at a solo ascent of the Matterhorn.
1979 - Was deployed to Tehran, Iran, during the Islamic Revolution;
- Won 7,000 francs at roulette in the Grand Casino at Monte Carlo;
- Second attempt at a solo ascent of the Matterhorn.
1980 - Completed military service and began graduate school;
met Diane, married.
1984-85 - Academic research in Paris, France.
1984 - Played golf at Saint Andrews in Scotland (will not reveal my score).
- swam in Loch Ness at Urquhart Castle (did not see the monster).

1986 - Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.
- son Frederick was born.
1992 - daughter Christina was born.
1996 - Was awarded a papal knighthood by the Secretary of State
of the Vatican: the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem
(founded A.D. 1099, during the First Crusade).
1996 - 2022 Was employed as an academic administrator and
History professor at Saint Francis University.
2019 - Returned to Versailles, Westminster Abbey, and the Matterhorn with Diane.
2022 - Retired;
- Attended Christmas Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity
in Bethlehem, Palestine, with Diane, Frederick, and Christina.
2024 - Toured Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium with Diane, Frederick, and Christina;
visited the grave of Johannes Vermeer in the Old Church in Delft in the Netherlands.
2025 - Diane and I met Frederick and Christina in the Holy Land for Easter Week.
The high point of our visit was our return to the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem,
the site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus.
