Steve's Story

Life After graduating from Escalon High School in 1979, I went to San Jose State University, majoring in Radio-TV Broadcasting and minoring in Broadcast Journalism. I worked in radio in San Jose until 1986, when I took a radio news job in Chicago. After 20 great years in Chicago - including the last 13 at legendary station WLS, where I was News Director and morning anchor - I made a big move to New York City in September of 2006. I now co-anchor the afternoon news on another legendary station...WCBS Newsradio 880. WCBS is an all-news radio station, and is the "flagship station" of CBS Radio. People ask me if I know Katie Couric. Yes, I do - we work in the same building...and, in fact, I talk to Katie every day when she comes on WCBS to talk about what's coming up on the CBS Evening News. I've covered wars, disasters, and every U.S. president since Jimmy Carter. I spent 8 days reporting from "Ground Zero" for ABC in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. I reported from an aircraft carrier during the war in Yugoslavia and from Kosovar refugee camps in Albania. Also reported from Bosnia. One of my assignments took me to Cuba, where I met up with none other than Fidel Castro - HONEST! (see photo) My wife, Jeanne, and I live in Hudson County, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan. On most days, I take a ferry boat across the Hudson to Manhattan to get to work. I can also take two trains - either way, it's a pretty easy easy trip. I spent several years as public address announcer for the NBA's Chicago Bulls, but had to give that up when I left for New York. But, I've stayed active in that here...doing some PA announcing for the New York Knicks and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden...the "World's Most Famous Arena." My parents have been deceased for many years. My sister, Judy, lives in Spanaway, WA. My brother, Bob, lives in Novato, CA. School I never really "fit" in any group in high school. I played sports (not particularly well)...and I was in the band (not real great at that, either). The fact that I lived out in the middle of nowhere - and had a difficult home life - meant I didn't develop a lot of real close friendships in high school. I'm thankful that the "popular crowd" was always quite nice to me...even though I wasn't in their group. School and its associated activities were my "out" from...Expand for more
the difficulties at home. All in all, I liked school. I'll always have fond memories of sports activities - even though some of our teams weren't very good. Band was fun, too! Favorite high school memory: A certain some one who went to East Union HS. She knows who she is! 4-H camp will never be forgotten! : ) College After graduating from Escalon High, I attended San Jose State University. I knew going in that I wanted to be on the radio. I was very involved - perhaps TOO involved - with my college radio station. You've heard of "gym rats", who play basketball all the time? Well, I was at the radio station every free moment I had! That didn't bode well for some one who was not a great student to begin with. I worked at several part-time radio jobs while I was in school. Then, in 1983, I "turned pro"...dropping school, to take a full time radio news job. The good news is that my radio career has worked out quite nicely. The bad news is that - 20 years later - I still have not graduated from college. I'm about one semester short. That is a sore spot in my life, and one I hope to remedy some day. I'm often asked to speak to high school and college classes, and I'm very open with them about my educational background. And, I tell them that if they're ever faced with the same choice I had, they should stay in school. If you're good enough to be hired BEFORE you graduate, you'll be good enough to be hired AFTER, as well. Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. All in all, I enjoyed my time at San Jose State...and I still maintain contact with some of my old fraternity (SAM) brothers. Workplace I am a news anchor at WCBS Newsradio 880 in New York City. We are the flagship radio station of CBS. I co-anchor the afternoon news, from 2pm - 7pm Eastern Time. My job is very rewarding. I've had a chance to do some amazing things and meet some very interesting people. Wars, disasters, presidents...I've covered them all. From the World Trade Center to the war in Yugoslavia to talking with Fidel Castro in Havana...I've been a part of all of them. WCBS is one of the most listened-to radio stations in the country, with around 2,000,000 listeners every week! Plus, we have a big listenership over the internet as well. (Google "WCBS 880" to find us) I've been very fortunate in my career path. I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing!
