Steve's Story

After high school, I went to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with the plan to be a doctor. I found, however, that required a lot more effort than I was willing to expend at the time. I got married at 19 just before my junior year, and then started going to classes, etc., and even got out a semester early. I was then a Deputy Sheriff in Philadelphia for a year and eight months, which was a very strange experience, but it was about the only job I could get (my mother was an old friend of the sheriff) with a BA in psychology while waiting for my wife to graduate and trying to decide what to do next. So I graduated from college, turned 21, had my pony tail cut off, and got sworn in all within about two weeks. It almost killed me when the sheriff said that the first thing I had to do was get a haircut! My wife and I decided to go to law school, and picked the University of Arizona in Tucson for a variety of reasons. We split up during our third year, and she moved to Phoenix and I stayed in Tucson. I ended up marrying another classmate, and we were together from 1977 until 2009 when she died of cancer (she just couldn't stop smoking). We didn't have any kids together, but she had a son from her first marriage. He also became a lawyer, and has a wife and a very cute daughter who turned five at the end of 2009. I visit them as often as possible in Seattle. I'm still practicing law, thoug...Expand for more
h I'm no longer with a firm and only work about half-time. I do commercial real estate work, and hardly ever have to actually see clients, so I wear jeans or shorts and Hawaiian or golf shirts to work most of the time. Tucson is still a very laid back kind of place, even though we passed 1 million recently, and there are only a couple of restaurants in town where you can't get in or would feel uncomfortable dressed like that. And I love the desert, which is fairly lush here compared to places like Death Valley. There aren't any sand dunes. You just have to get used to the idea that most plants out here don't like to be touched, and make you pay for it if you do. I spend a lot of time on the computer these days, both at work and at home. I can essentially work from just about anywhere that has web access, so I try to make sure that everywhere I stay has wi-fi. At home, I'm often looking for old rock & roll and reggae music. (It's amazing how much archival stuff from The Beatles, The Stones, Neil Young, etc., is out there if you just look.) Many people have told me that I should have been a disc jockey, but that's a tough field to make a living at and usually requires moving around a lot. I do make a custom disc for my granddaughter for every half-birthday. I've gone through all of the songs of our childhood ("How much is that doggy in the window", etc.), and now I'm moving into more rock and roll.
