Steve's Story
My wife Kathryn and I live in Roseville, CA. We have three children, Elissa, Kevin, and Hannah. Elissa is teaching 2nd grade, and is married to Joey and they live in Redding. Kevin edits film for a company that produces videos on national parks, and produces his own films (webserials<dot>com) in his spare time. Hannah just graduated from college, and is looking to start the next phase of her life. Our home church is Rocklin Community Covenant Church in San Jose. I became a Christian in 1977, while in college. Kathryn pointed me in the right direction, and some reading of the Bible on my own did the rest!
My wife Kathryn and I served thirteen years with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea, beginning in 1991. We finished a translation of the New Testament and literacy materials for the Yongkom (yo-ng-go-m) people. We were there at their request. There are about 20,000 Yongkom people. Yongkom is one of 850 languages in Papua New Guinea. We worked with three Yongkom men on the translation. Since 2004, I have been working as an editor on a series of books produced by Wycliffe for mother-tongue translators (those wanting to translate th...Expand for more
e Bible into their own language and know English as a second language). These books explain the meaning and give examples in simple English for translating verse by verse.
Life in Papua New Guinea was, well, different. The village where we lived has no electricity, so we had solar panels that ran the lights, the computers, and the 2-way radio. I pumped water everyday from the rainwater tanks under the house to a header tank on the roof, so we had cold and cold running water. The fridge ran on kerosene, the stove on bottled gas. Once a month I drove to town for supplies, it was an all day excursion. The people were helpful and encouraging. While we were learning the language, they were very patient with us. Their culture is very different from ours, a local pastor (now retired) would clue us in any cultural mysteries.
Prior to Wycliffe, I worked for IBM in San Jose, CA for 12 years, after getting a degree in Electrical Engineering. Why did I switch from engineer to translator? Well, I guess God had something to do with that. Lord of the Universe, King of Kings, you know, that guy.
