Steve's Story

Life Well there wasn't a 25th so I'll keep my fingers crossed for the 30th. I currently live in Fairfax Virginia just West of Washington DC. I'm married to a wonderful lady, Sheliah who works for a law firm in Tysons Corner. After completing flight school for helicopters in 1986 I was sent to Korea where I served for two years. I've since served in Germany, the 1st Gulf War, and Fort Riley Kansas. I left active duty in 1994, got a Masters Degree in Business and worked in Human Resources, Safety Management and Training. In 1998 I left Kansas and moved back to Massachusetts where I worked at Harvard University's Fogg & Sackler Art Museums as the Deputy Director of Safety and Security. While in Massachusetts I joined the Army Reserves and eventually volunteered to deploy to Bosnia for a peacekeeping mission. I realized then how much I missed the military and decided to stay on active duty after we came back from Bosnia. I've as the Executive Officer of an Assault Helicopter Battalion and am currently the Battalion Commander deployed in Kosovo. All and all I'd say I've had a pretty good life. Although, I've had my ups and downs (I've been divorced twice) I've seen the world, maintained great friendships (Ben Tevis and Sandy Mikszen "Tevis" were up for the holidays in 2005 and we along with their two beautiful children went skiing in West Virginia) and have made several life long friendships along the way. If I had to do it over again, I don't think I would have changed much. I hope to retire in about 6 years and return to South Florida to start my own business. One of my life acheivements that I'm proud of is I ran the Miami Marathon in 2004 and finished....it wasn't pretty. But my most outstanding acheivement is my Son Joshua, but who isn't absolutely in awe of how wonderful their children are. School My biggest crush was Angie Kovach. We were in Coffee House together our Senior Year. A bunch of us did a dance to a song from the movie Grease. I played Travolta and she played Olivia Newton-John (we got to kiss on stage). We started dating but drifted apart after graduation. I saw her during our 10 year reunion and she came up and gave me a great big wet kiss. Luckily my wife was up stairs changing after Mike Mason spilled a drink on her...but Angie's big hairy knuckle dragging boyfriend kept giving me the evil eye all night. The teacher that most inspired me was Mrs Smith in English Litature. She help me appreciate the classics like Candid by Voltere. I wish there was some way to let her know now what a huge impact on my life she made. The most uninspired teacher was Mrs Goodhart or what I foundly called her, Mrs Heartless. But, to her credit, she did pass me with a D instead of failing me and allowed me to graduate on time. I guess my greatest memories was the group of friends we had. Of course there was Ben Tevis who I still get together with about once a year and consider my best friend in the world (and I've been all over the world). Then there's Joel Whalen, Jimmy Colletti, Mike Mason, David Roth, Steve Waller, Bobby Little, Bob Causa, Art Calis, and David Eratostene. My biggest disappointment is we never hear from Jimmy Colletti. Would I do it all over again...In a heart beat. College After graduating from South Broward I went...Expand for more
to college at Troy State University in Alabama on a George C. Wallace leadership scholarship. I'm not exactly proud of the sponsor of the scholarship but beggars can't be choosers. While attending Troy State I enlisted in the local Army National Guard and went to Basic Training in Fort Sill Oklahoma. I wasn't very impressed with all the snakes, scorpions, and huge tarantella spiders running around. I dropped out of school after my sophomore year and moved to Massachusetts and got a job splitting cord wood. After doing that for half a year I thought it was best I get my butt back to school so I got accepted to UMass Amherst. For some odd reason, I enjoyed my military experience with the National Guard so I enrolled in the Army ROTC at UMass and when I graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1985 I also got a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation Branch of the Army. Workplace My favorite job was valet parking cars at Joe Sonkins on A1A just off of the Hollywood Beach Blvd bridge with Ben, Joel, Jimmy, and Mike. Military After graduating from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1985 and getting a commission from the ROTC, I went to the Officer Basic Course and Flight School at Fort Rucker Alabama (about 30 miles from Troy State University where I attended college my Freshmen and Sophomore years). I completed my training after a year and was assigned to the 55th Combat Aviation Company near Souel South Korea. When it came to flying, it was one of the best assignments a young Lieutenant could ask for. I started out as section leader, and then got a detachment command at Camp Red Cloud where I supported a Three Star General and his staff with a three helicopters. Later, I was assigned as the company executive officer until I went back to Fort Rucker for the Officer Advance Course. While in Korea, I met my first wife who was also in the military and we were married at Fort Rucker. After the Advance Course, I accepted an assignment near Frankfurt Germany in 1988. While I was there, I witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was one of the first American pilots to fly over Former East Germany and saw that very little had been done to build up that country since World War II. There were still piles of rubble from bombed out buildings near the small towns. In December of 1990, I along with the 3rd Armored Division joined 7th Corp in Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. We had over 140 helicopters in our Aviation Brigade and luckily didn't lose a single aircraft or crew through the conflict. After returning from the desert I commanded an Assault Helicopter Company in Germany before I was reassigned the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley Kansas. Soon after we arrived in Kansas my son was born. After Desert Storm, the Army was trying to draw down so I left active duty in 1994. After completing my Masters Degree in Business Administration, I got back into the Army Reserves doing the weekend warrior thing. In 2000 I volunteered to deploy to Bosnia on a peace keeping operation with the 29th Infantry Division as the chief aviation officer on the Division Staff. I realized then that I really missed being on active duty and decided to stay active ever since. I currently serve as a Aviation Battalion Commander in Kosovo.
