Steve's Story
As some few of you know, right after escaping from high school, I joined the army--out of the frying pan, into the fire.
Except for those years were not so hot war-wise and I served some years in a nuclear missile unit in Germany, evaluated anti-aircraft guns in New Mexico, and trained recruits at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma (may I never return there).
Post-military I spent a year at Mt. Hood Community College proving that I wasn't quite as stupid as my high school transcript would suggest, then transferred to Lewis & Clark College, where I earned a BS in sociology and anthropology.

t seven years. At which point I realized I was losing my hair and if I didn't get back to school, I was never going to earn that doctorate.
So I went back to school, at Cornell, and completed a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology. About the time I was leaving CHD and heading for graduate school--1996--I met my wife, the artist Angie Reed Garner, and we've been together ever since.
I completed my doctorate in 2004, after living in New York, Berlin, and Chicago, and started looking for an academic position. After three years in visiting positions in the Midwest, I decided to try something different, and moved with my wife and our 7 year old German shepherd, Heathcliff, to Lahore, Pakistan, where I teach at an elite private college and do research on military and society.
