Take a look at me now, if you are interested. After suffering from a coma in 2005 and enduring 7 years of therapy to recover, including 5 years homelessness as a result, I managed to leave Big Pharma behind by using a return to athletics as my path. With diet, exercise and meditation I lost the 75 pounds I had gained as a result of side effects from the medication, began to train again, rediscovered my identity and am now once more at the top of my fitness, both mental and physical. My High School Track and Music activities included the Rose Bowl Parade with Music Teacher Douglas Barber and California State Champion with Track Coach W...Expand for more
ayne Ambrose. My best effort at Pacifica High School was most probably my 3:18.1 in the 1320 yard race, State Championship, setting a school record that stood for 27 years, missing Terry Lamb's California record by just over one second. If not for Billy Thompson chasing down Maurice Chevalier from La Quinta High School on the backstretch, I may never have started that kick over the final 240 yards, which led me to the finish line in first place. In the three years following graduation, I would run a Mile in 4:08.6 and the Marathon in 2:18:36. In 1973 I had surgery to remove a tumor from my right foot. This essentially ended my running career. So, with the option of cycling or other non-weight bearing activities in my future, I chose to try racewalking and continue competing in Track. In 1976, I won the National Championship at 40km, in 3:35:26.3 and a Gold Medal at 20km in the World Championship in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, in 1:32:58.3 My best times list includes a 6:16.1 for the Mile Walk, second to the World Record at the time in 1987, at the Los Angeles Times Indoor Games. Personal bests for other distances include 43:18.4 at 10km, 1:28:07.6 at 20km and 3:28:43.7 at the Portland Marathon in the racewalking division, 1989, which is still the Course Record. Training and racing at age 62 now, it is strange to be finishing ahead of the 40-year-old athletes, but I am doing it. The 2nd best time in my age group in the USA this year is nearly 2 minutes behind my current time in the 5km Walk. How sad is that? I guess we have more of the new generations on their cell phones than going out for track. Be well and of good fortune, everyone. Steve 'DiBo' DiBernardo, July 16, 2015.
