Steven's Story

After graduating from Fremont, like a few others I went to De Anza and got my AS in Business Administration. I then took one year off and worked in retail taking every Wednesday to sail in Santa Cruz. I then entered Santa Clara University where I graduated with a BSC in Marketing in '84. I joined my father's firm for two years while I worked to pay off school and my car for two years before heading off to Japan. I lived and worked in Kobe/Osaka Japan from the end of '86 to the end of '92. I was able to see most of the country from the seat of a motorcycle or by train, and also spent over a month working on a dairy farm in Hokkaido where I lived with my wonderful host family. After returning to the States, I rejoined my father in business and we further built an advertising agency that serviced healthcare, bio-science and transportation companies. In 2000 after serving as president for three years we sold the agency and I joined USweb/CKS, later to become marchFIRST, as an Account Director managing interactive clients. A 10,000 person company that imploded badly (worse than Enron for the employees); but not before I was recruited to return to Japan to help with the marchFIRST and Dentsu joint venture. d I want on to Japan and worked for six months before meeting her in Hawaii for our marriage ceremony and then honeymooning in Yap. Two wonderful weeks of SCUBA diving and reconnecting after our six months apart. Not very long after returning to Tokyo as husband and wife, marchFIRST was history and so was Dentsu's need to have a joint venture and ex-pats in their employ. Set adrift with a lump sum payout of my contract Lea continued her Japanese studies and working as an independent speech pathologist and I enjoyed not having a job for the first time since I was 15. Nearly 25 years of continuous employment. The break last 30 days before I started to go stir crazy, fortunately, in what is so typical of the ex-pat experience in Japan, a job was offered out of the blue and I joined Razorfish, another internet marketing services company, as a Senior Project Manager and Account Director. Let's fast forward to 2004, when Lea and I returned to the US after 3.5 years in Tokyo. I joined the motion graphics company Design Reactor as the Director of Operations, then Zoomedia as the VP of Production and now out on my own. If you are really interested in my professional path you can view it on LinkedIn. The most significant change in the last five years has been the birth of our twin daughters Isabelle and Grace in March of 2007.
