Steven's Story
Time for another update. (September 3, 2019) After high school I went into the Marines and stayed there for 10 years as a combat engineer, EOD, personnel clerk and weapons instructor. The taxpayers paid for trips to Vietnam (twice), Japan, Okinawa, Cuba, Australia, Laos, California, South Carolina, North Carolina and a bunch of other places. I would like to thank the US taxpayers for their contribution. After the Marines I moved to FL and took an AS degree in Electronics, went to work for IBM in VA. Got a couple of patents on microchip manufacturing (no money just points as IBM is a tad stingy). Left there for NY. Lived in Binghamton for a couple of years, joined the Army and stayed with them for 12 years. Worked as a carpenter/mason, clerk, reup NCO and a couple other jobs. They sent me to places like Guatemala, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait. Didn't like the Army so much, too much sand, camels and odd people wearing towels on their heads. Retired from the Army, took a BS degree in Industrial Engineering, moved to TN, bought a house. Published a number of books ("A Roar in the East" and "Brown Gold") (buy them on Amazon, I can use the money). Have recently completed a couple of books on music from the 1960's and I'm working on a couple more. I have 4 kids of my own and one kid from somebody else who ended up in my house. Oops, forgot to say I got married (back in 72). Still kicking with the usual aches, pains and annoyances of getting older. Been in TN for 23 years now. Like it, won't leave (except on vacation). I've got a couple more books in the works so keep an eye out for them. If you haven't done so, read the first two. If you're interested I have the 67 yearbook on DVD (with 66 and 68) and I'll mail you a copy (no charge). Just send me a note. My third son finished a tour in Iraq a few tears ago year (helic...Expand for more
opter unit) and is now working for Bell helicopter. My adopted son was a scout with 1st Cav in Afghanistan. He finished a tour at Gitmo as a guard at Camp Delta. He is now an instructor for air assault at Ft Bragg. First son had 15 years with the local school system (as does my wife - teacher special ed), and now works as a maintenance technician (mechanical) for a food company. second son is a department manager for Wal-Mart, Fourth son as in the Air Force and worked on C-130 aircraft. He was killed while on active duty in the Persian Gulf. We miss him a lot. I'm fully retired working on books, the family genealogy, doing house work, remodeling my wife's "perfect" house (I hate HGTV) and harassing the cats. Don't worry about them, they hide in ambush and get even although there are now 3 of them and I think they now own the house, although I get to pay the mortgage and cat food fees.. Do a lot of volunteer work with Rolling Thunder, Disabled American Veterans, Honor Flight, American Legion, the Homeless program at the local VA hospital, Gold Star Mothers of America and various military and veteran related events locally. Met and chatted with President Trump (I have pictures). Very nice guy. Go fishing when I can. The bass around here are really hard to catch. Started canning different foods. Actually kind of fun. So far tomatoes, potatoes, apples, peaches, beets, chili and spaghetti sauce. Looking into a couple of different relishes. Wife has taken up sewing postcards (don't ask). Got a motorcycle and learned to ride it (at my age). Made a trip to Washington DC with Rolling Thunder for the annual Memorial Day ride. There were over a million bikes there. Quit a spectacle. Made a trip back with Honor Flight and went to most of the memorials. Would like to come back to Elmira for our class 55th reunion.
