Steven's Story
School
Started at Mission Bay H.S. as a geeky, socially unaware, shy kid and graduated much the same from San Marcos H.S. in 1982. Attended Palomar J.C. and Mira Costa J.C. for a short time (failing every class) then joined the Air Force. Finally graduated college with a 4.0 GPA (Military was good for me!) from Chapman University in Orange, CA. I now run a very successful business that stretches across most of the U.S. and I'm expanding to Taiwan and the Philippines.
College
With straight F's before the military and straight A's after the military... I'm glad I joined!!! School opened me up and really created a monster in business! I wish I had been more serious and open minded when I was younger because it would've saved a TON of embarrassment as a teen! Professionally, I don't see the need for college other than the social skills learned. When I interview people now I don't even look at the resume or the education I evaluate their mindset and I'm right 90% of the time when making hiring decisions. Entrepreneurs should have a university they can attend that teaches the real life skills needed to succeed. Many private colleges teach this, but who can afford it when they are still struggling for success???
Workplace
It is very rare to find work that is satifying on a personal level as well as a monetary level. I sometimes feel guilty with the spare time I have because many of my friends work 50+ hours per week. I volunteer with my church a lot and travel the country. After 8 years my mother still doesn't believe I actually do anything... until I show her the paystubs! I think part of my excitement is that fact that I control what happens in my business and personal life. So many of my friends are miserable because of a bad environ...Expand for more
ment at work or a terrible boss. If I put into an advertisement what I actually do daily and placed it in a newspaper I think every person in the world would apply! Kind of wierd to move from what I used to be (geeky and unaware) to on top of the world. Actually, I'm still a little geeky... just a rich and happy Geek! :)
Military
Unfortunately, I was assigned to only 3 bases: Eglin in Florida, Taegu in Korea, and Los Angeles (Hollywood) AFB. I joined to get my life together, get an education, and see the world. Most of it happened. I just wish I would've travelled more. I actually joined to get OUT of California and away from my life and friends at the time. So, all my requests were for stuff as far from California as I could go and where do they send me for my final 5 years??? California... Of Course! I can't complain though because it is where I met my wife and found my amazing career. It is hard to stay in touch with friends because everyone moves so often. I think some of my closest friends were in Florida and Korea. Times I'll never forget! In Los Angeles I was in the middle of making the switch from enlisted to officer. I aced the officer exam, passed all the physical exams, and even had pre-orders to Cal State Long Beach for my ROTC training. But, before I could get going Clinton downsized and offered a nice sum to depart the military. I figured that with a degree in business and 10 years of experience... everyone would beg me to work for them for millions of dollars! WRONG! Anyway... like I said, it eventually led to the most amazing business ever so I can't complain. I do wish I would've stayed reserve and finished my commission as an officer. I think I would've easily retired as a Lt. Col. or higher in the reserve.
