Steven's Story

Life I retired from my career as an Engineering Executive in 2002, prompted mostly by my narrowly surviving a severe, life-threatening, and permanently debilitating illness. One of my arguably well-known projects several years ago was in the capacity of Project Manager and Senior Engineer for the GTE AirFone - the telephone that is in the seatbacks of many commercial airplanes, such as those of United Airlines. So if you ever use the AirFone, think of me (unless the darned thing doesn't work!). My positions have run the gamut over the past three decades, starting as an Engineer and progressing through Engineering Manager, Quality Assurance Manager for International Operations (mostly Singapore, Malaysia, and Mexico), Director of System Development, VP of Engineering, and President (the latter of my own, albeit small, Engineering company). On the technical side, I have expertise in both electronic hardware design and software development, including C, C++, C#, Java, Perl, CGI, SQL, VB.NET, et al, as well as Automation and Test Engineering. More recently, I have also developed Internet Security and Home Control technology. Utilizing the latter technology, I can control and maintain surveillance of my home from virtually anywhere in the world. I am married and living in a private community in Colorado, 25 miles southwest of Denver. Our home is immediately adjacent to and overlooking the Rocky Mountains, with a magnificent view and many thousands of acres of mountain wilderness area owned and maintained by my community, replete with many miles of hiking trails and streams, of which I've availed myself quite frequently. Although I love Colorado and the mountains, there are a number of things that I DO miss about living in Commack, perhaps owing to my family's many generations of living on LI, particularly: the SEA, REAL pizza, GOOD bagels, old friends. My wife, not yet retired, works in the Electronics industry, where we met. We have three "children": our 31 ...Expand for more
YO son is a Real Estate Broker and Restaurateur (owning two restaurants), in Los Angeles, CA; Our 30 YO daughter is an Attorney specializing in Criminal Defense in Miami, also in the NY and NJ BAR; Our 17 YO daughter (17 going on 27!) is a JR in HS with a 4.0 GPA and likely Class Valedictorian, planning to attend Yale or Georgetown in 2006, with political aspirations and, in a more practical vein, International Law and/or Business, specializing in Asia (capitalizing on her ability to speak English, French, Mandarin Chinese, and Vietnamese fluently). Recently, she was an active volunteer with the local Presidential Campaign Headquarters. We are down to one pet now: Scooter, "The Polluter", (aptly named, considering the "lawn ornaments" he likes to leave in inappropriate places in our back yard) is a mutt, the BEST breed of dog. We found him as a puppy in a box outside the side of a supermarket on an 11-degree February night, and he was the only one of his litter in that box that had survived exposure to that night's frigid weather. He's been a marvelous companion ever since. Nicki, "Licki", another mutt, was also appropriately named, as she expressed her considerable affection by constantly licking everyone who approached (some watchdog!). We adopted her under similar circumstances, after, ahem, "liberating" her from an abusive home. Unfortunately she recently died at the ripe old age of 14. My mom and dad, 80 and 81, respectively, are still quite active and agile, happily living in Florida. My dad still walks or rides his bike several miles most every day, as well as maintain a busy schedule performing various yard landscaping and home improvement projects, and spends a couple of hours a day surfing the Internet. My mom is also quite active, busily performing all of the household chores such as shopping, cooking, cleaning, as well as helping my dad on all manner of home improvement projects. Best Regards to Everyone, Steven A. Nott March 2, 2005
