Steven's Story

Workplace STEVEN OSTROW from San Diego, California, Steve earned his BM and the highest undergraduate honor of Performer's Certificate on full scholarship as a trombonist at the Eastman School of Music. He has recorded with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, American Wind Symphony and the Colorado Philharmonic while performing extensively with the touring shows of Ringling Brothers, Ice Follies, Ice Capades, Lippizan Horse Show, and back-ups to the major touring shows of the day. Steve also performed jazz with the Gap Mangione band (brother to Chuck Mangione). Upon graduation, Steve went to Venezuela to perform and solo with the Maracaibo Symphony (Venezuela), establishing a branch of the Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, returning to New York to perform summers with the Rochester Philharmonic. Steven has played command performances for the president of Venezuela with the chamber group Solistas de Venezuela and was frequent soloist with the Caracas Philharmonic. His solos appeared on Venezuelan national TV and included tours to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and other stops in the Caribbean. In Europe, Steven has placed in the finals with the prestigious Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphony. He continued to perform as trombonist with the Ohio Chamber Orchestra,Trinity Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Opera, and as lead trombonist for performances at the Carousel Dinner Theater and Cleveland Playhouse (Abyssina,). As a trombonist, he has served on the faculties of the Orquesta Juvenil de Venezuela in Caracas and Maracaibo, Conservatorio de la Filarmonica de Caracas. t the Humbolt German School in Caracas. He would later solo with Rodrigo??s Concierto de Aranjuez as a classical guitarist with the Akron Symphony Orchestra 1999. Steven??s violin studies include studies at the University of Akron where he was accepted with an assistantship into the master's program in violin performance, graduating with MM degrees on both violin and trombone in 1990. During his studies, he toured Europe with the Puccini Festival Orchestra. Here, he learned the art of the strolling violin and returned two years later to dedicate himself to busking the streets of Europe. He joined the Akron Symphony (violin) in 1989 and the Lakeside Summer Symphony in 1990. He was featured in performances at the Cleveland Playhouse (violin and guitar) in the Grapes of Wrath. He has recorded and toured with the West Virginia Symphony and performed with the Wyoming Symphony. Locally, he has performed with the Cleveland Opera (violin and trombone), and the Ashland and Mansfield Symphonies. 1996 Steve joined the Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band, who has just released there third album to rave reviews in New York, Jerusalem, Los Angeles. He has performed with the Jewish Orthodox bands Kol Simcha, and Mazel Tov. He is the primary trumpet soloist at St. Anselm's Church in Chesterland.. As a trumpet player, he has performed with many jazz orchestras in Cleveland area. A documentary on Steve??s instrumental program was broadcast in 1993 locally on Akron TV-WNIR CH 29/14 Warner Cable. A more extensive documentary on the A Day in the Life of a Freelance Musician based on the career of Steve Ostrow is under production by PBS-TV 45/49 to be aired in Feb. 2005.
