Steven's Story
Gosh...where do I begin? It was June 13th of '67 that we graduated if I remember correctly. So, let's begin with June 14th...As I recall, I slept in, until around noon, the next day..HEY!!!!! I'm only kidding.
The night I graduated I had not a clue what I really wanted to do for the rest of my "working" life. Not a clue! So, as many did, I gave Metropolitan Community College a shot. Sometime during the summer of '69 I decided that college wasn't going to be my thing...I wanted to get into radio and television broadcasting. I got up out of my seat in one of my college classes and walked out deciding then and there it was now or never...I immediately headed to Brown Institute, took the admissions test...As timing would have it, I had also tested for a position with the Minneapolis Police Department so I could afford to go to Brown...and I got the job there. Over the course of the next few years, I worked full time, then went to school full time, graduated in Oct. of '71...Started my first radio job in March of '72.
The beauty of that first job, as with each of them in broadcasting was it was NEVER work. You know the old saying..."Find something you love to do, make it a career.....and you'll never WORK a day in your life". That was true! Unfortunately broadcasting, at least in the earliest of days then, didn't pay diddly!
I ended up going here and there always gravitating BACK to the Police Department in between broadcasting... but ultimately settled into the Police Department for good in January of 1974.
Deciding it was a smart move to stay put at the PD since I was going to be getting married on March 1st of that year. It was time to think about a 'family'...and stability.
Throughout the course of my career with the PD I had worked my way up from the "Hot Desk" as it was called (report stolen vehicles) to the final fifteen years as the head of the Evidence Division.
During the course of those years, my wife and I had two kids....Michelle (now 32) and Brian (now 29).
After 9 years of marriage, it ended in divorce with me getting the kids, the house and my ex paying child support. I mention this only because I was THE FIRST MALE in Hennepin County to have been awarded SOLE LEGAL CUSTODY of his kids (1982/83)....(Okay, so I didn't LETTER at Central...THIS was a BIG thing <G>).
My kids were two and a half and five and a half when my wife and I divorced...so my life kind of went on HOLD there for a while. I was busy being MOMANDDAD.
In 1985 I met Kathy, she was Director of the childcare program that one of my kids attended. (Actually, I was on the Parent Board that hired her back in 1994). We had our first date on May 18, 1985 and were married March 22nd of 1986....You just KNOW when it's right! And boy, did I get it right the SECOND time. Never regretted for a minute the first one either....as that resulted in the two kids!
It's been a pretty good run since graduation....with educational needs being met....work experiences.... parenting....coaching little league, softball, serving as my daughters girl scout troops COOKIE MOM...<sigh>..I look back and wonder how I did it... but also know I wouldn't change a thing! I've served as the Chairman of the Richfield Human Rights Commission, along with a variety of volunteer activities.
One of my FAVORITE volunteer activities allows me to return to my greatest interest...BROADCASTING! I do Radio Talking Books for the Blind through ...Expand for more
the State Services for the Blind. I also have a radio show every Saturday evening (recorded)...and the first Sunday of each month I go in and do a live broadcast of the St Paul Pioneer Press newspaper so that listeners can get the latest news. Our broadcasts go out not only on radio but also via the internet, so they make it worldwide.
I consider myself very lucky to have been in a position to retire at the age of 50 from the City of Minneapolis. Along with my VERY part time position in the Pro Shop at Hiawatha Golf Course...I've got the Radio Volunteering....I've done some volunteer work for the Richfield Police Department...and, believe it or not....I sing!
My singing is presented in what I named "A Touch of Vegas"....With tux and the bling and all....and I go out to Senior Centers...Assisted Living Complexes....Ebenezer Home, etc....and put on a show of the music of such greats as Frank Sinatra..Engleburt Humperdinck...Chicago...oh god, too many to list. It gives those folks the chance to hear some of the music from their younger days when they now, don't have a chance to get out and do much of anything.
A few years back, Kathy and I decided to buy into a vacation property on Maui and we now go there each February. We absolutely love to go out whale watching...let's just say that a bad day in Hawaii beats the heck out of ANY WINTER day in Minnesota. It also provides a very nice "break"...I'm usually done working the golf course early November...then six weeks gets us through the holidays....six weeks later we're taking off for Hawaii... come back and usually around 6 more weeks and I'll be starting back at the golf course.
Looking back over the years, with the two kids....and then grandchildren...my son going off to Iraq for 22 months....and now, a total of FIVE grandkids....Nick, Alexys, Ashley, Nathan and Anthony....It makes me grateful that I didn't drown them when they were in their teens....You know the saying....."Oh God, you have to be soooo concerned about DRUGS when you have teenagers.....". I found that to be VERY TRUE....I was SOOOO tempted to DO drugs when they were teenagers...<sigh>.....but, we all made it..LOL!!!
I sit and think about the forty years that have passed and I'm grateful for all that I had and all that I have. From fourth grade, my buddy Dave Mickelburg taught me how to laugh.....my mom, had a great sense of humor....she too contributed to so many good times and lessons to be learned....LIFE IS GOOD!
Kathy's mom and dad made a tremendous impact on my life....they were two of the finest people that I could ever imagine meeting. Kathy and I did not want to have more kids... and her folks treated Brian and Michelle as though they were their very own! Her folks both passed away two and a half years ago....just three weeks apart....I've since had a tattoo done on my arm....in Japanese symbols which stand for: LIVE - LAUGH - LOVE That is what they shared...and that is what I'm thankful to them for doing so. It is now my creed.
In closing, I can only add this: I never thought that I would get BETTER as I got OLDER...well, at GOLF anyway. It DOES make a difference when you're able to play three, four, sometimes five times a week.
If you're ever in the "hood", stop by and say 'hi' at Hiawatha....I'm usually there Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays until around 10 a.m.
And now...as I say to the listeners....Until the next time everybody....TAKE CARE!!
