Steven's Story

Life After graduation from Amityville Memorial HS, went to Hofstra U, then enlisted in Army in '67. Hosted TV show in Korea, entered advertising biz after getting out of army. Spent time in NY, Miami, Atlanta and Hawaii in advertising and radio. Won two Clio awards for copywriting and voice-over work. Published my first science fiction novella in Analog Magazine in 1991. Relocated to the Portland, Maine area in 2005 as the Creative Director for the largest privately owned radio corporation in New England. I'm also a national columnist for the "bible" of the radio broadcast industry, "Radio Ink, Magazine" and have a sideline company, "Theater of Steve's Mind," which provides radio scripting, voice overs and production. I lecture and do seminars for various state broadcasting associations. Married with three kids. Coach Girls Softball and invest modestly in top shelf tequila. Military I enlisted in 1967 at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. I had planned on becoming a Public Information Officer in the signal corps, having been assured a berth in Officer Candidate School prior to my enlistment. When I discovered that the army could, without your consent, transfer you from Signal Corps to the infantry upon graduation from OCS, this seemed like a bad career move. As an enlisted man, I attended Fixed Statio...Expand for more
n Transmitter Repair School at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey and in January of 1968 I was sent overseas for a hardship tour of duty in Korea. I wound up at Armed Forces Korea Network where I wrangled an audition as a network continuity writer and was assigned to cover the negotiations on the DMZ at Panmunjon of the release of the sailors of the captured USS Pueblo. This led to a stint as a deejay and when the Korean government granted AFKN an additional half-hour of TV each day, the brass decided they needed something to appeal to the tens of thousands of American children, dependents, stationed there. Thus was born the Professor Von Brain show, which I wrote and starred in, airing daily. If you do a Google search for AFKN Alumni, you'll find a photo album. Upon returning to the states I was sent to Fort Ritchie in Maryland. This was the post that supported a top secret underground installation, buried deep within a mountain, that was straight out of a James Bond movie. I spent a year there and I would tell you all about it, but I signed documents in 1969 that pretty much stated that if I ever talked about it, they would "disappear" me. I left the army in 1970 with the rank of Specialist 5th, E-5, the equivalent of a buck sergeant and my 3 year hitch is one of the proudest accomplishments of my life.

Sunrise in Scarborough this morning. Snow yesterday afternoon gave way to torrential rain which washed away all the previous snow, but then overnight it snowed again, making the New Year white and bright.
