Steven's Story

As I sit here thinking of the last 21 years since I finished high school I think of good friends of the past, time wasted since and hope for the future. I cannot claim to have had a beautiful life but it has been both good and bad. Those who remember me probably remember the goofy kid who didnt really fit into any mold. I was me. Me and that goofy little grey car that I loved got into much trouble, had lots of adventure and had alot of fun with my friends. Sam Gelndenning, Jason French, Keith Parish, Jerry Glover and Jim Brock to name a few. When we were young we couldnt wait to get out on our own and see the world. Now, years later, I look back with a sense of longing for the simpler days of my youth and the time when friends were just waiting to get into trouble with you. Ok, enough nostalgia. Well, I left Southside High School in the spring of 1987 and started on an Assoc degree in electronics. I graduated from college in July of 1989 (Southern Technical college in Little Rock, I think it is now closed) and took a job at Texas Instruments in Dallas operating equipment that made computer chips. I even wound up living in the samd apartment complex that John French lived in. Much to chigrin of his wife we continued to get into trouble. After a couple of years at TI I got into Equipment Maintenance and was very happy. Time passed by and I eventually was terminated from TI in April of 1995. It was a hard time for me. I learned alot about how people are nothing but numbers to large corporations. During this time I became very close to my longtime friend Nicole Basil. She and I got married in Aug of 95 and were happy. I took a job with Motorola in Oct of 95 and we moved to Austin Texas. We bought our house in Dec of 95 and she was pregnant with our child in Jan 96. My son David Michael Dawson was born 10-08-96 and I cannot remember a time of greater joy in my live. At that time I had it all and was truly happy. Three weeks later (the day after my birthday) I was laid off. When I was in high school I wanted to work on electronic equipment but I had on idea of the type of unstable field that I was getting into. I was Mr. Mom for 9 months with my newborn son. Eventhough I was jobless, it was a good time. I got to spend more time with my infant son than most fathers get and I am thankful but I was gettin restles...Expand for more
s not working. I started working for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in Aug of 97 and things seemed to be right back on track. I had a good 2 years at AMD but the industry took another downturn and in Aug of 99 I wound up laid off again and my wife and I also split up at that time. Things had been stressful and she wanted to go back home to Ohio. I worked on trying to get my marriage back together. Things looked good. I got employed at Solectron in Sept 99 and I spent Christmas in Ohio. Nicole was comming back in the spring and I was happy again. Two months later she was getting married to an "old friend who just happened to look her up". My world crashed. She ran to England and took our son with her. It had to be the low point of my life. I stayed at Solecton till the big electronics industry crash and got laid off in June 01. I worked odd temporary maintenance jobs untill Feb of 02 when I got a job as an Equipment Engineer at an industrial laundry. Tartan Textiles was certainly not the most advanced place I have ever worked but I did love the job. I have never had a job use so much of my skills and training as working in that laundry. I quickly rose to Sr engineer and 2 years into working there I was promised promotion to Chief Engineer but I was terminated in April 06 by the new owners because I was too expensive to pay. I had the last laugh because even now, 2 years later, they have equipment that will not run because they havent been able to hire someone with my experience that can repair it. Ha! Now I am back in the high tech electronics industry again just in time for another downturn. My timing is impeccable. I am back in the big league but my heart is not in it anymore. Last year in may (2007) I bought some land in Pangburn Arkansas and in Aug I sold my house. I have since built my a nice shop on my property and paid it all off. I will probably still be here in Texas till Sept 08 but I plan to be living back home before my 40th birthday in Oct 08. Most of my family now live in the Heber Springs area so I will be around the people I love. I cant wait, most of my stuff is already there. Being looked over by my older brother Tim. Anyway, to all those who knew me I say hello and if you still live in Arkansas, maybe we will run into each other and have a good laugh for old times. Steven E Dawson
