Steven's Story

After graduating from Keppel in 1960 I had ambitions of becoming a veterinarian. I worked two summers at an animal hospital, developed one unbelievable allergy to cats, discovered it was more of a business than I realized, and gave up that dream. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-med (Science/math) I received a teaching credential from California State University, L.A, and taught Math/Science from 1967 to 1970 at Garvey Middle School. From 1970 until I retired in 2005 I taught Math in the Capistrano Unified School District in South Orange County (SOC). I met my first wife in 1965 and we were married in 1967. In 1969 we moved to Mission Viejo, in SOC. The marriage lasted a little more than 11 years when my first wife left in 1979. I am grateful to her for many good years but especially for three reasons, the two wonderful daughters we have and in 1980, I met the woman who would become the love of my life, Susan. We have been together now from the first night we met over 32 years ago. Teaching in SOC did not generate the needed income to support a growing family here, so I had many sundry jobs to supplement for the necessities we needed. (Like buying our own home.) Along the way, I became interested in Real Estate. I became an agent in 1976, and a Broker in 1978. I am now semi-retired as the Owner/Broker of Pacific Area Realty. I will admit that I do have a few, but only a few, regrets. One thing that I have tried to do, albeit sometimes too late, is to at least reach for my dreams. I loved teaching, and enjoy being a realtor, but one dream I had was to see if I could be a professional bowler. So in 2006, after retiring from teaching, which gave me more time to practice, I qualified and joined the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA), and am now a 6-year member. I also became a certified USBC Bronze Coach. My oldest daughter graduated from UCI and is now a second-grade teacher in the Capistrano Unified School District. She has been married 16 years to her high school sweetheart, but unfortunately, they were unable to have children. My youngest graduated with an accounting degree from Sonoma State University, but after 2 years behind a desk she decided she needed more excitement in life, she became a Navy Aviator flying the S3Viking Jet. After finishing her tours of duty, she is now working for the Social Security D...Expand for more
epartment, and the onslaught of gray in my hair has slowed. Sue and I live happily in our San Juan Capistrano home, with our two giant dogs, (Anatolian Shepherds). After moving to SOC I eventually lost touch with everyone from the old neighborhood. Of course, we made many new and wonderful friends here, but over the last few years some of our nearest and dearest have passed away. Entering the September of my life and experiencing the loss of some dear friends and loved ones, has set me reminiscing about lost connections with many once close friends. I feel what is most important in living is the now. That in reality is all that we really are sure we have, with the only exception the memories we keep of our past. To all my friends, whether we meet again or not, and to all who may read this, I wish for you many happy moments, and great good health. P.S. After waiting many years, and beginning to believe we might never be grandparents, our eldest daughter had her adoption process completed and a wonderful baby granddaughter was to be added to our family. Meanwhile, our youngest daughter gave birth to a wonderful baby girl giving us our first grandchild exactly 4 weeks to the day before the birth of our adopted granddaughter. We don'€™t suspect collusion, but suddenly from no grandchildren we have two wonderful granddaughters. The two pictures of me with our granddaughters posted were candid and surreptitiously taken by my wonderful wife (AKA Nana) of me (AKA Poppy). The first, is me dutifully caring for our adopted granddaughter, and the second, of me helping the other to brush a goat at the petting zoo. The final picture is of my beautiful wife, Nana, taking proper care of our granddaughter at the wild animal park. The latest Now Picture is my nearing 4-year-old granddaughter getting a surprise kiss from me, AKA Poppy. Short update: We do not do Facebook, or any other social network. Here is the only place I communicate with whomever cares to visit the site. Our granddaughters are now 8 years old and bring us total joy. We have all survived the Covid outbreak. (To date, Nov. 3, 2021) Unbelievably, the love of my life, Sue and I are heading toward 42 years together. After 14 years I dropped my PBA membership, however I still love to bowl. Another update in 4 years? Until then, I hope all is well and good with everyone.
