Richard's Story

It's been an interesting journey since leaving high school. I spent many years getting over-educated. Two years at El Camino, a BS from UC Davis in Physics, an MS from UC Berkeley (UCB) in Physics, and finally a PhD from UC Davis in Electrical Engineering. Between my MS and PhD, I spent two years teaching Physics and Electrical Engineering (EE) at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). I had been inspired by my El Camino Physics Instructor Tom Wilson to pursue a community college teaching career. But, I got bored at the prospect of doing the same thing over and over again, so I returned to school to get a PhD. Oh, I guess I should mention I married Julie, one of my students at SRJC. She ended up with a similar career path, including a PhD in EE at UCB, but alas, we had more of a student-teacher relationship than anything and the marriage ended when her schooling ended. After I finished my PhD at UCD, I stayed in the academic world, doing postdoctoral work at UCB for about five years while Julie was finishing up her schooling. Between UCB and UCD, I did a lot of teaching to support myself, in addition to research. I clearly still had the teaching bug in me. During this time, Julie and I did one a few very noteworthy things. With very little prep, we ran and completed the San Francisco Marathon in about four hours. It was a great accomplishment and I'll never forget starting the race by running across the Golden Gate Bridge and looking across the Bay to downtown SF. We also were able to take two trips to Italy, which was awesome. If you haven't had a chance to travel abroad, it's definitely something worth doing. I was also very fortunate to get a chance to go to Europe another time just after completing my undergrad work at UCD. That trip included Switzerland, Germany and Austria. At the end of 1994 I got divorced and moved to Madison, WI where I took a postdoctoral position at the University of Wisconsin. I spent 1.5 years there, getting a good taste of cold country. My best memories of Madison are of the long bike rides in the countryside past the pristine dairy farms. While there I was trying to see if I could land a permanent faculty position somewhere at a university. Unfortunately, I had chosen to get my PhD at UCD instead of UCB, which was a strategic mistake. So, after seeing the writing on the wall, I applied for and took a faculty position at another community college, in Cheyenne, WY. I ended up spending three years in Cheyenne. It was great from the perspective of having lots of outdoors activities. I love to hike and bike and run, and hiking in particular is a favorite activity. My brother Glen, who got his PhD in Physics, lives near Boulder, CO and works at the University of Colorado. So, besides some great hikes in Wyoming, Glen and his wife and I took many great hikes in the Rockies. We made it to the top of two 14000 peaks. At the college in Cheyenne I taught Physics, Engineering, Math and an Introductory Computer course. That brings me to computers...I had spent a lot of time programming in FORTRAN while in my PhD program and as a postdoc, so I had pretty good programming skills when I got to Cheyenne, albeit it, all in scientific programming. While in Cheyenne, I discovered programming for business applications. I taught myself Visual Basic, Access, and also taught myself about relational databases. More on this in a moment. While in Cheyenne, I met and married my second wife, Joyce. She had four kids, almost all grown up, so she was ready for an adventure. As I was about geared up to change careers to Information Technology (IT) about the time we married, we jumped on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to life overseas. She took ...Expand for more
a position as the Tax Director in American Samoa (in the South Pacific), and we moved there along with all our household goods and cars in 1996. I was very fortunate to get some good IT consulting opportunities while in American Samoa. I developed a couple of custom Access applications for a businessman and also served as the American Samoa Y2K Site Manager. American Samoa has a very interesting dicotomy between their very strong traditional hierarchical tribal culture and the modern US State-like three branched government. It was very difficult for Joyce to whip the Tax Office into shape when her employees were all on "island time", coming and going as they pleased. One day shortly after she started, they decided to have an all day luau in her honor, complete with pig roast and all the traditional fixings like breadfruit. The frustration with the slow moving culture resulting in us leaving American Samoa after less than a year, cutting short a two-year contract Joyce had with the government. As Joyce was originally from the South, and we both agreed we wanted to live in a warm climate, we decided to live in Tallahassee, FL. Thankfully, the internet had made it's way to the South Pacific by 1999, so we were able to arrange interviews in Tallahassee via email and then we flew to Tallahassee and were very fortunate to both get job offers within a couple of days. We relocated to Tallahassee in late January 2000, where I continue to work and live today. However, my story is not nearly over. I'll break up the rest of my story into career and personal stories. On the career front, I have done very well in IT. I ended up working for several local computer consulting firms, one national firm, and then with my current employer, Citizens Property Insurance Corporation. Along the way I worked myself up from developer to project manager to my position at Citizens, where I am the director of the Program Management Office, where I manage a Project Management Center of Excellence (CoE), a Business Analysis CoE, and a Portfolio Management program for all IT projects. It's a great job and Citizens, as a government entity, but private sector-like corporation which provides property insurance to those who can't get it in the private market, has the best run IT shop in Tallahassee. On the personal side, I ended up divorcing Joyce in 2005 and I met the love of my life, Paula. I never had any kids of my own, and Paula has two boys named Nicholas and Christopher who are now 12 and 9, and were 9 and 7 when I met them. Paula and I met at work and were immediately drawn to each other very strongly. I have no doubt it fated for me to end up in Tallahassee (though it was surely a circuitous route to get there!), to meet Paula and form a wonderful family with her and the boys. We have a wonderful life together. Paula is a very loving woman who shares all of my passion for life, including outdoors activities like hiking and biking. She and I work out regularly at the gym, taking spinning classes and working out with weights. Thanks to Paula, I now have the family I always longed for and because of her I feel very blessed and fulfilled. Paula is a very bright woman who is also in IT so we have a lot in common on the career front. Maybe someday we'll get a chance to work together. We enjoy every day as it comes and are certain we'll be living and hiking in the mountains someday.
