Stu's Story

First, a little background for those of you who are brave (or bored) enough to read this. I was born in Alhambra, California in 1954 but my family moved to Phoenix when I was one year old. I decided to come with them since it was hard to make a living as a one-year old child. Since I was not born in Arizona, I cannot claim to be a native. However, I am older than most natives now. I love Arizona but, frankly, I hope to someday become a winter visitor. When I was three years old, doctors gave my parents some alarming news. I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. So little was known about the disease at the time that the doctors told my parents to prepare for the worst. I am 67 years old now and still going strong. Sadly, those doctors are all dead. I graduated from Arcadia in 1972. I don't have any enduring friendships from my years there, although I have a great many memories, most of which are positive. My first date was freshman year when I made it into Key Club. I went to the end-of-the-year party with Dianne Kay. If I had the courage to kiss her goodnight, I'm sure we would have been married by now. I would then have to give this bad news to my current wife -- and to Dianne. I received my BS in Psychology in 1983 from Northern Arizona University. I finished my course work in 1979 but I had some library fines I needed to pay before they would let me have my degree. Being thus prepared to enter the working world, I immediately got work in the field of engineering. At the time, they were essentially hiring anyone who could read. My 13-year career in the technical field working in Data Management and Configuration Management with such companies as Sperry Flight Systems and Allied-Signal prepared me well for the wave of downsizing that swept the manufacturing industry in the mid-nineties and left me without a job. In 1994, I was laid off from Allied-Signal. And so, with a BS in Psychology under my belt, I then proceeded to build and operate a recording studio in my garage called Blue Sky Recording. I was a self-taught musician in college and also learned the recording business as a songwriter/producer. I also played music in bands all around the valley called Nice Guys in Neckties. With the recording studio, I built a clientele base and sold it in 1998. Luckily, I was able to keep my garage. I hosted a radio show on a small radio station (97.3 fm KRXS), from 2000 - 2005 called Jukebox Cantina. I used the DJ name "Stu D Baker" and used to refer frequently to Arcadia HS and the days listening to KDKB on the radio where I gained an appreciation for good music. studio and my trusted BS in Psychology, I founded an independent record label called Hayden's Ferry Records. The label released over 40 titles over 8 years with 10 titles making national independent radio charts. The label also secured national and international distribution for its catalog. Through my experience in the music business I learned that if you wanted to make a hundred thousand dollars, you needed to spend a million. I sold it in 2006. Having sold my second business but not yet ready to retire, and holding my still unused BS in Psychology, I naturally started a career in stand-up comedy under the name Stu Baker. I performed regularly in comedy clubs all around the country in comedy clubs like the Tempe Improv. I started touring in some Western states in 2008 and even headlined a small club in New York once in 2009. Those of you who knew me in high school might think it's ironic I was doing stand-up when I (still) could barely stand up. This makes for good material. I quit doing stand up regularly when I could no longer stand up. I am now in a wheelchair full time and tell bad jokes to my grandchildren. I hosted a short-lived comedy radio show on Phoenix radio station 1480 am called "Laughspace" in 2006. The manager canceled the show right before they sold the station. It wasn't my fault. I have been married to the same beautiful and tolerant women, Linda, for over 30 years, who was born and raised in Mesa so she IS a native. We have raised three wonderful children -- we each had one from a previous marriage and one between us. Amy (mine) married to Jon lives in Gilbert and works for Grand Canyon University. Amy had twin girls - Addison and Riley - in May 2009. These were my first grandchildren. They were material for my stand up act. Steven (hers) married to Liz lives in Mesa and works for Apria Health Care. They had our third granddaughter, Rain and first grandson, Skyler. Sara (ours) lives in Phoenix near the Arcadia District. She works at a company called Mad Science - which does science demonstrations and presentations to kids - as a program manager and part owner. Her husband Jeff is a history teacher at (wait for it) Arcadia. They are all, of course, wonderful, talented children. Linda and I live in Tempe and travel frequently to California where apparently I am a native. I went back to school and received my MS in Psychology at University of Phoenix. My decision to go back to school to get my MS was based on the incredible amount of value my BS has contributed to my life. I can't wait to see what doors open for me with this degree! P.S. I like cheeseburgers. c. 602-576-4677
