Stuart's Story
Currently working in Madison (1 block from Capital) for State of Wisconsin - Dept of Public Instruction putting my Ph.D. to work assisting school districts integrate information and technology literacy/fluency into the core academic curriculum, developing policy on technology in schools and administering federal technology grant programs, among other things. Lots of paper pushing, phone calls and emails - and yes, writing!
August 2008 was my 10 year anniversary at DPI - WOW!
Latest work focus is how Web 2.0 apps (blogs, wikis, social media, personal learning networks) can affect education.
My position requires some travel around the state to do presentations and to Washington DC (1-2 times a year for meetings and advocacy (that's a polite term for lobbying) our state's congressional delegation to support educational technology and school reform. I have also consulted with groups visiting Wisconsin from Jordan, Korea, Japan and Thailand on issues surrounding educational technology, student achievement and school reform. tic society.
I live in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin with my wife Wendy and two kids, Cathryn (9) and Colin (6). Have kept in touch with my pals from HS over the years - in fact share Badger season tickets for men's hockey with Joe Landowski and Jamie Letcher.
After High School I attended UW-Whitewater (BS in 1983) then, moved to Kansas City, Kansas to teach Journalism, Photography, and English for 4 years at Washington High School (coached softball for two years as well), then to Roselle, IL (Lake Park HS) for a year and finally to Sun Prairie HS (for 2 years) where I took over for Karen Camplin as the journalism teacher.
I taught photography, journalism and English at the HS level at those three schools before I migrated to administrative work in schools (K-12 Instructional Technology Coordinator in Sun Prairie and high school principal in Johnson Creek) while I earned Master's (1995) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees at UW-Madison - both in Educational Administration.
While obtaining my Ph.D., I worked for the UW Medical School/Department of Surgery as an education specialist and web designer before I moved to my current position at DPI in August 1998.
