Stuart's Story

Life I left Urbana for good in Sept '68, and spent my freshman year at Morehead State, KY. Kentucky wasn't my cup of tea, so for the fall term in 1969, I transferred to Central State in Wilberforce, near Xenia, where I finished a BA in Sociology and History in '72. I have some special friends from Central State days who have become more special as time goes by. After one year of grad school at the Univ. of Wisconsin in Madison, I'd had enough of college life, so I left to start working and also got married for the first time in '73. After 2 years back in Columbus, '74-'76, I'd had enough of cold weather so transferred on my job to Long Beach, CA and moved to nearby Santa Ana in Orange County where my older brothers Larry and Bobby lived at the time. I lived in various OC cities like Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim Hiils, Irvine, Laguna Hills and San Clemente for the next 25 years. After another marriage from '79-'97 and two sons, now 38 and 36, on 12/31/2000 I packed a few things, gave away everything else, and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, HI. I now live in the town of MIlilani, about 15 miles outside of Honolulu where I retired as an Energy Consultant. To be retired and happy in paradise with a beautiful island lady, it doesn't get any better in my opinion. I have been fortunate to have decent health and I do my part to keep it going with regular practice and teaching Qigong and Tai Chi martial arts meditation classes to people from all walks of life. My wife, Marlene, is shown in several pictures with me; she was a student in one of my classes in the fall of 2004. She quickly made her way to the head of the class and became the teacher's pet. We have been together since then and got married in January 2010. Can you say "inseparable"? She's hapa, Hawaiian for 'half' --- her mom was a war bride, born and raised in Japan, although Marlene was born in South Carolina. In July 08 she went with me to Ohio, where we attended my 40th HS reunion in Urbana, then went to my brother Ted's house in Dayton the next day to meet some special Central State friends, better known at 'The Troop', or F Troop. In the summer of 2012, we returned to Ohio for a visit with Mom and Ted, then took off for Cleveland, where I was born. We had a blast at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame there, then rented a car and drove to Niagara Falls, Canada, for a couple of days, then north and east though Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, before heading south down thru NY state to Connecticut, NYC, NJ, Philly, Baltimore and DC for 4th of July. It was a great vacation. A few months later, Marlene wanted to see her all time favorite singer, Paul McCartney, so we flew to western Canada, Vancouver, to see him perform at the BC Stadium. He played for 3 solid hours. In the summer of 2013, we made our first trip ever to Europe, touring Italy --- Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Pisa, Florence and Venice, before heading north by train to Munich for an independent tour of southern Germany. Loved it, the people, food, music, historical sites and transportation were all awesome. In October 2014, we went to Japan, my first time ever going there. Marlene lived there as a young child and still has cousins and aunties living in Fukuoka. We arrived in Osaka, a metropolis of 19 million people, where we took the Shinkansen bullet train to Fukuoka. After visiting family there, we backtracked through Hiroshima and Kyoto, two cities rich in history and culture, before flying home from Osaka. The airport there is as modern as any in the world...Expand for more
, and the transportation systems are all top notch and on time. In the summer of 2015, we took a 19 day land and sea cruise through Turkey and Greece. It was an awesome vacation, starting in one of the world's most interesting cities, Istanbul. It bridges two continents, Asia and Europe, with 15 million people hustling all over all of the time. The mosques (3200 in Istanbul alone), the food, the people and the sites were all unbelievable. The only bad part were the salesmen at the bazaars; they were way beyond pushy. After a week touring historical sites in southwest Turkey by bus, we boarded a cruise ship for the first time for both of us, and headed down the Bosporus through the Dardanelles Straits for the Mediterranean and a hop to several Greek islands before pulling into Athens, another unbelievable city of over 5 million people. We toured by bus through the city to the Acropolis and several other places before resting, then we flew back to Istanbul to catch our flight home on Lufthansa Airlines, stopping over in Frankfurt, Germany and San Francisco. A lot of flying time, but it was well worth it. This was our last vacation for awhile, we were tired and broke after 3 years of running around from one side of the globe to the other. We did take a short trip to Las Vegas in the fall of 2015 for Marlene's class reunion, the group from Okinawa, and then I went to Ohio for my Mom's 90th birthday, but that was short compared to Europe. Japan is only 8 hours from Hawaii. Our most recent trip was to Thailand, in November 2017. Marlene was already in Japan with her son and his girlfriend, so she met me there. I flew on China Eastern Airlines and stopped over in Shanghai. We're planning our next overseas vacation in China in 2019, to see the Great Wall, Beijing, Xi'an (the terracotta warriors), the Shaolin Temple, Shanghai and maybe Hong Kong. In Thailand though, we ran all over Bangkok on the train and in tuk tuks and cabs. The rides were all very wild, as Bangkok is a very congested city of 14 million. We visited the Grand Palace and many other sites, then hired a driver to take us to the ruins of Ayutthaya, about an hour north of the city. The second week we flew north to Chiang Mai, near the border of Myanmar (formerly called Burma). We walked the night markets, ate good street vendor food and also took a side trip out of town to an elephant sanctuary. We loved Thailand but it was so hot and humid there, much worse than Hawaii. We were glad to return home. If you're going to be in Honolulu on vacation or whatever, please feel free to look me up. We can kick back and have a Mai Tai or two, watch the beautiful blue Pacific waves, bask in the warm sunshine and trade winds, and 'talk story', like the Hawaiians say.
