Scott's Story
Life
My bio cannot exceed 4000 characters. And yet, my life since high school has probably included far more than 4000 "characters". Only one of whom, though, was a graduate of Rich Central. Gay Coats (Cotter) and I spent two and a half years together trying to live my dream - not hers.
How to make this marginally interesting?
At 60 and three years after I wrote the remainder of this bio, I am finished with my 26 month tour in the Peace Corps in Ukraine and a year with AmeriCorps*VISTA in rural West Virginia. I am now the executive director of a non-profit in St. Petersburg, Florida.
What else? I gave up the practice of law and my second wife and my home and furniture and clothes and . . . to join the Peace Corps in 2003 and now await the arrival of my fiance who is Ukrainian.
I have an adopted daughter from India and a son. They both seem reasonably well-adjusted; largely through the efforts of their mother - my first wife. I am generally recognized as very intelligent in most matters - though, relationships is not one of them. I am now 60 years into being without a clue although Inna is hoping that with my age has come some wisdom.
I have lots of degrees. Didn't get a Ph.D. though as I left that program at the University of Virginia when I decided I needed a change in my life. One of the many times I made that decision.
I lived in Denver before my escape to Ukrain...Expand for more
e. I climbed and hiked mountains, kayaked, skiied and snowboarded, mountain biked, played soccer and generally tried to be competitive with 20 year olds. I am, however, unmistakeably not 20. Which is a problem. I really hate getting older.
I still dream of writing and less often about playing the cello. I dream of living forever and have abandoned my hope of doing mountain search and rescue. Now I do triathlons and hate the "action" photographs they take of me competing. I am truly 60.
That's the short version. The long version includes a detailed description of the 4000 characters I have known in my life.
__________
That was the version apparently eight years ago, since I am now 68. The updated version includes my divorce of Inna, my marriage to Cheryl (that's four, if you are counting), the marriage of my son and daughter and the appearance of seven grandchildren. What remains the same is my attempt to compete with 20 year olds, although, my true competition, whether in half marathons or triathlons, is with those in my age group. Cheryl and I train together, compete together and do pretty much everything together. The fourth marriage is the spectacular one; not to diminish the very real value of the others. I am back to the practice of law after Peace Corps and AmeriCorps (rural WV). Next - I am unsure. I still like to write.
That's the update.
