Stuart's Story
After Narbonne, I attended Los Angeles Harbor College where I graduated with an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts Science, and then took one year off from school to work as a field assistant at McMurdo Station Antarctica for the austral summer. During my time at McMurdo Station, I had the opportunity to participate in several local excursions via helicopter, including an up close view of the summit of active volcano Mt. Erebus, after the helicopter I was in crashed there at 12,400 feet elevation. We were rescued after 12 hours, but the helicopter remains there to this day. On returning from Antarctica, I attended Cal State University Long Beach where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Geology. I returned to Antarctica after Long Beach to winter over at South Pole Station, where I worked logistics and supply. Yes, I am a member of the 300 Club (Google that). After over one year at South Pole Station, I spent one month touring New Zealand, followed by four months touring Europe on a motorcycle. My next destination was Fairbanks, Alaska where I attended the University of Alaska and graduated with a Master's degree and later a Doctorate degree, both in Geology. I worked initially for the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program on the Alaska North Slope and offshore Beaufort Sea, including sub-ice diving, and then for the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS). The DGGS provided the opportunity to work in remote field locations throughout Alaska...Expand for more
, and on one occasion, to tour permafrost regions of the People's Republic of China as a delegate with the U.S Committee on Permafrost. While in Fairbanks, I married, built a house, had two daughters, and obtained a pilot's license. After twelve years in Fairbanks, I relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the Management and Operations (M&O) contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Nevada Test Site, now termed the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). My work at the NNSS included activities in support of national and global security, and facility, project, and program management. One highlight of the work was one decade of management of the U1a Complex (Google that) and another tunnel complex at the NNSS. A side opportunity during my time at the NNSS was to work as a geologist, camping in the Peruvian jungle and mapping the geology of the route of a proposed pipeline from the Camisea gas fields over the Andes Mountains to the coast south of Lima. I retired in June 2021 after 33 years of employment with five M&O contractors, and now consult part time on a DOE activity through Los Alamos National Laboratory. I divorced years ago and now live with a lady who has five grown children and their fourteen children. My two daughters also live in Las Vegas. I'm now working on my bucket list, with recent trips to the Caribbean, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and the UK, and plans for other locales. I now split my time between Las Vegas and Hilo, Hawaii, where I have an oceanfront condo.
