Sue's Story
Life is full of chapters. This is probably one of the most relaxing and fun chapters for me.... I can sit on my porch and watch the Red Bellied Woodpecker feeding his children knowing that the only pressure of responsibility I have (after the days work is done) is to refill that feeder so that those children get their food on demand. From the porch, I can also look over the pond and into the pasture and see our wonderfully social sheep and lambs feeding on good grasses. And when I am inclined, I can pick up the basket of English Paper Piecing and baste more fabric pieces onto the little octagonal papers, all of which will end up in a fun little quilt. Or I can work on a hooked rug at the drop of a hat. That's what I call retirement (Retired RN 2007).... although ......I still have an internet business which keeps me in contact with others who have similar interests.
When the economy was very tanky....between 2005 and 2010, my family and I decided to make some changes that would enable more self-sufficiency if need be. We searched the internet for the "spot" to move to ...found what we thought would function well for us...purchased an Amish home with the necessary buildings a...Expand for more
nd moved in in 2010.
We purchased a nice house, with NO plumbing, electricity, or HVAC, - a workshop, chicken coop and barn on a little acreage. (This is what brought us back to Ohio). The plumbing and a little electricity were our first and necessary achievements. Then we started two very large gardens, a flock of chickens, and a small gathering of sheep. We work together to get the gardens in and harvested, tend the sheep and chickens. The food is really good here! It all takes a lot of care and time, but we eat well and sleep well. And the energy output helps keep any additional weight off.
It's very peaceful ... we live on a gravel road in the country ... and, oddly, most of the traffic has stopped since the Amish moved away. Each season is a wonderful experience...but my favorite is Fall. The hickory trees drop their fruit, the gardening is done and the canning and food storage is completed. We have enough corn stalks, pumpkins, and leaves to do the decorating that is expected. I grew up in a rural area with lots of farms around. At this time of life, I find myself once again enjoying a similar life-style...and it seems to contribute a feeling of youth and eagerness.
