Sue's Story
6 years ago I worked full time as a buyer/procurement and after work I would feed the homeless, I actually made sandwiches on the trunk of my car (with paper towels ofcourse :) I would make 77 sandwiches every night and I would go to 6 different Starbucks and pick up their day old pastries. I also went to two grocery stores and they filled my car with cakes and pies, fried chicken and so much more! My friends loved the desserts. I would have two friends (without homes) pass out the desserts. I even had a dry cleaners give me clean clothes that were not picked up. My friends loved that. I would hang up the clothes on the link fence and my friends could pick out what they wanted. I would go to the leavee and to camp city and deliver food to my friends there. I even fed one Mother and her 3 kids every night. That was very hard to see. But if I ran out of sandwiches I would drive to Mcdonalds and get them hamburgers, so they wouldn't go to bed hungry. I also loved to bring them sweets. I remember the youngest son went to the homeless school (Mustard seed school) and they gave him a new pair of tennis shoes. He was so happy and he showed all of our friends his new shoes! I loved helping people and hearing their stories. It's really sad people will come and feed the homeless on Christmas and Easter, but they were not around the other 363 days of the year. I had friends that did catering and they had a lot of food left over from one of the parties they catered. They called me and asked if I wanted the food for our friends. I said YES!!! And they met me and filled my trunk with aluminum trays filled with turkey, ham, green beans, mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes. I drove to two places with the food. It was pouring rain and I found a campsite with 25 or so friends and they were thrilled to get this hot meal. And I went to this store that was near by camp city and my friend me me there and he took the rest of the food and he put it in the stroller behind his bicycle. And later he told me they dined on the food for 3 days and that made me very happy!!! I even brought food to the steps of St. John's church where our friends were sleeping there. I sat on the steps and made sandwiches and I would bring them cup of soups with hot water so they had something in their tummy so they could keep warm. I delivered not only clothes, but I also purchased warm jackets on sale at Walmart for $6.00 each. And I received gifts of blankets (that were homemade quilts) and new sleeping bags. Our friends really appreciated these gifts. I had delivered underwear and they were snatched up in seconds flat. I also ...Expand for more
would go to the Stockton Family Shelter in Stockton, CA. I would bring toys, books, bottled water, cups of soups, crackers and clothes. I remember one afternoon the people told our friends that they wouldn't have dinner that night. And one little boy asked me for food for his family. I ran to Mcdonalds and picked them up hamburgers. And we became close friends.
I met so many nice people, but yes there was drugs and drinking. I knew if someone was strung out on drugs and I would leave. There was fights, but I would pack everything up and go to the Salvation Army and give the people in the parking lot the food I had remaining. My last trip downtown my car was filled by Bishop Hayes, he had meals from a hospital and he filled my trunk, my back seat and my front seat. I could barely find room for me to sit comfortably in my car because the boxes were pushing my right leg!!! But I made it and everyone received two dinners that night and they were thrilled and I was thrilled they received such nice meals. Unfortunately I got sick and I could no longer help my friends. But I hope there will be more people that will deliver food. My friends told me that this lady brought deli sandwiches to them, but she wouldn't talk to them. I felt bad and I told my friends I wish I could bring deli sandwiches. And my friend said "but Sue you deliver your sandwiches with love" and I am grateful for that! The shelter has web sites and they list what they need. But if you decide to go to the shelter, make sure your donation goes right to the people that stay there and it's not to be sold at their thrift store. I witness that happening on several occasions and it pissed me off. Anyways thanks for reading this and let me tell you, my friends were hungry and thirsty. This mom and her kids would drive around in the summer time delivering bottled waters to our friends. Another father and his two daughters would drop off extra pizza to our friends. A couple would fill their truck with sleeping bags, thermal underwears, stoves, lanterns. I asked them why they did this and they responded "they were blessed and they wanted to bless our friends in need". I would give tours to teenagers to show them campsites and I would ask them "where is their refrigerator, tv, bathrooms, beds and food. And many of the teenagers went home and told their parents. Hopefully some will donate their clothes or food or water to our friends in need. I loved what I did. I missed my friends. But now I need to take care of myself. Thanks again for listening.
