Sumner's Story

Update 2/2/2023 - Sad to say, I lost Mandy, my sweet little chihuahua-mix companion dog at the end of 2022. I knew she’d grown to be a big part of my life over 15+ years, but the reality of losing her has been tough on me. Currently: Living in the Denver metro area has been awesome - I love the Colorado seasons, and walking and biking the local and nearby mountain trails. Living near an airline hub has its benefits, too. I’m glad to be able to share it with my partner Jennefer. With the pandemic, I’ve spent a lot more time using flight simulators on my PC, polishing my flying skills, while enjoying that virtual world, through their amazing portrayals of the weather and geography across this planet. History: I have fond memories of a hectic family-relocation world-travel summer after junior high school, then starting high school in Highland Falls NY, a beautiful town with a deep history. We were just adapting to our temporary life there, when we were suddenly uprooted again, to head back to Palo Alto after all. The exceptional Gunn High teachers helped me enjoy the learning process, and Dr. Hawkinson kick-started my fascination with computers. I loved being in marching and stage band, orchestra, and stage crew, and crewing for the Guys and Dolls production at the end of my senior year. I also enjoyed biking the local foothills, building and listening in on the world with my shortwave radio, and touring Canada to play at Expo with the Blue Saints. Sometime in the middle of all that, I tried some flying lessons - whooee - hooked! The gorgeous San Luis Obispo countryside put a wonderful slant on my college days. We had an eclectic mix of phone phreaks, cowboys, and chemists in the dorm. Fun electronics labs. The trailer hitch incident. The Honda 90...Expand for more
Summer. I was always dreaming of flying, and enjoyed the rare actual flight, especially learning spins and precision recoveries over Montana de Oro beach. Butterflies in Grover City. Horseback riding on Pismo Beach. Slope soaring RC gliders by Foothill Blvd. Hiking Bishop Peak and the magical nickel glider. Biking to Los Osos. The rare fancy dinner at This Ole House. San Diego was a paradise. Loved the Balboa Park museums and Frisbee golf course. I had a delightful time day-sailing, racing, and teaching sailing. Also loved body surfing, volleyball, and bonfires at La Jolla Shores beach. Had some great experiences hiking, camping, playing racquetball, tennis, softball, and even learning to play bridge with friends, who also introduced me to the Original Pancake House - what a treasure! I finally got my private, instrument, commercial pilot certifications, and found myself flying all over, to local airports, out to the Anza Borrego desert and hot springs, to little mountain airports, and many long trips up the coast to visit family in California and Washington, which sometimes involved some particularly challenging and fun experiences. Our company was sold and moved us to Denver, where I earned my multi-engine pilot rating, while living in a hotel near the airport, before finding more permanent housing. I wrote software used to launch rockets for several decades, working with the same people, even though our company changed names several times - you can see our Atlas, Delta, and Vulcan rocket launch history on the United Launch Alliance website under /missions. I couldn't imagine retiring, then did it anyway, and am really enjoying the more relaxed lifestyle. I'm only a basic member here, so find me on the usual social media, if you'd like to chat!
