Susan's Story

I live in very small farming town in Iowa, up until last year I taught piano for 20 years. Now I am working on my certification to become lifeguard and swimming instructor. I am married (1st husband died in 1978) have 1 son and 1 granddaughter. My husband is a high school science teacher which is very ironic because that was always my worst subject. He will be retiring this Spring and we plan on traveling for a bit and then we are going to start raising golden retrievers as a business. Life has been difficult at times - my high school years were very traumatic for me as I was hiding many secrets and living in a house where horrific things were going on to my brothers and me. It is sad to think about this as I don't go back there in my mind much anymore. I have a good life now, wonderful husband, son and daughter in law and granddaughter - we live in a town where there isn't even a stop light which I absolutely love. About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and for a while there, I was quickly headed for a wheelchair but my doctor suggested that I take up swimming - which has been great for me - now I am lifeguarding and teaching advanced swimming. Gotta make the best of things right! Sometimes it is very hard but I keep plugging along. I do not plan on attending my reunion as I never fi...Expand for more
t in there - I was lonely and odd at that age, trying to make like my life was ok, was miserable for me because living in an abusive house was painful. My brothers and I have many scars - I seemed to pull out of it better than they did - if any of you know them - Kemp & Jordan Alvarez, you know their lives are such a mess. Kemp is dying from stage 4 liver disease - drinking, and Jordan did time in prison for molesting young boys - thus this is the result of growing up in a house where my stepfather abused all of us and my mother turned a blind eye. Enough said. I wish I could go back 40 years and change things - had at least reached out to an adult and asked for help but I was too afraid. Even my best friend Teri McClay Garcia didn't know about this until several years ago when I met up with her on this website. Good news is now she and I talk a lot - I've been back to Cali several times and see her. She was the bright spot in my life back then - and she's the same happy wonderful friend now. I'm sure the 40th reunion will be a good time but I won't be there, to be quite honest, seems like the same groups are still the same groups - either you were in or you were out and I was definitely an "out" maybe that sounds a "snotty" but I obviously still have bad feelings about all the past and need to get over it.
